July relief: Gurugram's monthly Covid case count lowest since April 2020

GURUGRAM: July saw just 210 Covid cases, the lowest since April 2020 when the pandemic had just broken out, at an average of 7 new patients every day, allowing the city to breathe easy after the fearful second wave that ripped through Delhi-NCR in April and May.
The number of deaths recorded was low as well, at 18, a sharp fall of 79% compared to 85 deaths in June. In April and May, the city had reported more than 1 lakh new cases and 455 deaths.

Between July 12 and July 17, no Covid deaths were reported. Similarly, no Covid patients succumbed to the virus between July 19 and July 25. The last Covid death reported in the month was on July 26.
The city saw the highest number of Covid deaths since the beginning of the pandemic this May when 343 patients died. An analysis of month-wise Covid deaths in the city shows after May, the second-worst month in terms of fatalities was this April, when 112 patients succumbed to the infection.
The health department said a majority of the Covid deaths reported in July were of patients who had comorbidities. Out of the 18 people who died of Covid in the month, five had diabetes, three had hypertension, two had kidney ailments and one had chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.
“We are witnessing a fall in Covid deaths at present. For the last two months, we have been working to keep the case fatality rate below 1%. We have finally been able to achieve this with timely treatment of Covid patients, efficient contact tracing and isolating people exposed to the virus as early as possible,” said Dr Virender Yadav, chief medical officer, Gurugram. He added that teams from the health department were reaching out to patients in home isolation daily to ensure low case fatality.
Among the Covid patients who died in July, five were between 61 to 70 years old, four were aged 71-80 years and eight were in the 40-60 age group. One was in the 31-40 bracket.
On Saturday, the city reported four new Covid cases. The overall caseload now stands at 1,80,891, of which 83 are active cases. The current positivity rate is 0.1% and the recovery rate stands is 99.4%. A total of 73 patients are in home isolation while 10 are in hospitals.
