Jaipur, Aug 1 (UNI) Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) Member of Parliament from Rajya Sabha Kirori Meena was detained by Rajasthan police for hoisting a community flag amid police restrictions at the Amagarh Fort here on Sunday.
Meena and his supporters managed to enter the fort--a spot that witnessed tensions between the Meena community and right-wing outfits--and unfurled a white coloured tribal flag despite prohibitory orders of the state police.
They also clicked pictures and released multiple videos from the hill before the police took them into preventive custody.
Earlier a Meena community leader and independent MLA Ramkesh Meena who had allegedly torn off the saffron flag at the Amagarh Fort.
Security in the area has been tightened after Kirori had stated that he would go to the fort for puja on Sunday.
Ramkesh Meena, who is supporting the Ashok Gehlot-led Congress government, however, said he has no objection to the hoisting of the community flag.
"There would have been no dispute if Kirori would have stated that he was going to hoist the community flag and not a saffron flag. The community flag is already there," he reacted.
Taking to Twitter, former Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje condemned the incident.
"The arrest of Dr Kirori Lal Meena ji, who gave a befitting reply to the Congress doing politics in the name of religion in the case of Amagarh Fort, is condemnable. Dr Meena should be released immediately," she tweeted in Hindi.
