Away from the maddening crowds: the Headland Hotel promises luxury and sanctuary beyond the clamouring and chaos of Newquay… and on that it delivers.
The Headland Hotel
If, like me, you’ve at some point found yourself Newquay bound for a hen/stag/birthday do in the past decade or so, it’s unlikely that blissful relaxation and pampering immediately spring to mind; but push past the noisy bars and bustling surf schools and you’ll find something worth venturing out for. The Headland, perched on a rugged peninsula where the edge of town meets the sea, is a hotel immemorial where the tradition of hospitality has been lovingly preserved, and where a new multi-million pound pool and wellness centre is waiting to transport you to a higher plane, if not via a plane. It may not be the crystal clear Mediterranean blues that we had all hoped to be summering by this year, but submerge yourself in the warm waters of Aqua Club’s sunset plunge pool with cocktail in hand, and you may just find yourself on the holiday you need, if not the one you spent lockdown hoping for.

The Aqua Club is a large indoor and outdoor wellness centre with no less than six pools and an outdoor sun terrace. There’s a 25 metre training pool for fitness buffs or those still trying to shed the lockdown pounds, a shallow splash pool (best-suited to smaller guests), a hydrotherapy pool, a vitality pool, an edge pool and the aforementioned sunset spa pool with sunset views over the Atlantic. For hotel and cottage guests staying at the Headland, use of the Aqua Club is complimentary, and it’s not the only perk to staying at this five star luxury hotel.

The Headland is seated on the edge of a perfect Cornish coastline and overlooks Fistral beach - one of Cornwall’s best. It boasts a wide selection of hotel rooms and cute coastal cottages in perfect pastels, cosily furnished in plush, patterned fabrics with large windows and unrivalled ocean views. Both hotel and cottages are family and dog friendly so you and the entire family can luxuriate together before heading to the beach or long coastal walks.

Tucked away beneath the hotel lobby there is also an in-house spa offering a selection of treatments to soothe and pamper. This is the place to get away from it all (including the kids) as this section of the hotel is strictly adults only and includes a swimming pool, sauna and Cornish salt steam room.

If you’re someone who prefers to get up and go rather than lie down and wallow, then make your way to the Headland’s Surf Sanctuary where surf lessons, paddle boarding and coasteering are all up for grabs and can be easily arranged by the hotel’s concierge.
The Deck Restaurant
When hunger strikes the hotel boasts three restaurants, the most low-key of which serves up a splendid selection of pizzas and salads at the Aqua Club. Due to covid restrictions and renovations the other two award-winning restaurants were closed during my visit but both come with sea views and rave reviews.
The Headland has much to offer the weary traveller once you walk through its doors, but as much as the gorgeous interiors, dreamy spas and trifecta of dining options might want to keep you inside: it’s what can be found right on its doorstep that really sets it apart from the rest.
