Man's curiosity centering the tiger is timeless. However, until recently, indiscriminate poaching coupled with deforestation, urbanisation and encroachment have led to an alarming decrease in the tiger population in the wild. It is estimated that while the count of tigers in the Indian subcontinent might have been less of late, it was in leaps and bounds more, a century ago. With only about a few thousand remaining, awareness creation and conservation efforts have started yielding results. To generate greater awareness on the significance of tiger conservation World Tiger Day is observed from 2010 and onwards. From Rabindranath Tagore, Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay, Satyajit Ray to Buddhadeb Guha - aplethora of writers have written about this phenomenal creature.
Both West Bengal and Bangladesh are proud of its Royal Bengal Tiger. And with July 29 being considered the World Tiger Day, a combined creative presentation on the most magnificent of animals was only waiting to happen. A documentary named, Dorakata - The Stripes, was released to commemorate the day. Made in Bengal, the docu involves the participation of Bangladesh Matchbox Collector's Club - a group of phillumenists in Bangladesh.
"Tiger is a unique creation of nature and so is the hobby phillumeny. Featured in the writings of many authors too, the prowess of tiger has always made man wonder and look up in awe. Hence, I thought of creating an awareness about the need for conservation of this royal animal through this docu. In fact, I have been trying to create innovative and interesting content through social media page," said elocutionist Korak Basu, who conceptualised, gave voiceover and directed the clips.
Penned by Jadavpur University student, Srijon De Sarkar, the docu aims to elaborate on such topics of conservation of the wildlife. It showcases a collection of match boxes featuring the majestic animal with excerpts of writings of select authors.
