Tamil Nadu: Woman kills alcoholic hubby in front of kids, surrenders

CHENNAI: A 29-year-old woman hacked her husband to death in front of their children at their Kancheepuram house on Thursday night, allegedly unable to bear his drunken behaviour, police said. The children who witnessed the incident ran to a neighbour’s house in fear, while Raziya later went to the police station and admitted to killing her husband.
While the body of Nowshath was sent to the Kancheepuram government hospital for autopsy, a case was registered and the woman was sent to jail.
Police said Nowshath, 34, an auto driver, married Raziya 15 years ago and she convert to Islam. The couple along with their nine-year-old daughter and six-year-old son lived on Malikai Street.
In the past couple of months, Nowshath had been harassing her for money after spending the meagre sum he earned driving an auto on booze. Raziya, who managed to run the family doing menial jobs, was forced to give him money whenever he demanded. He often came home drunk and physically abused Raziya and the children. “To ensure the children were safe, she sent them to neighbours’ homes until Nowshath cooled down,” said an investigating officer.
On Thursday, Nowshath came home drunk at 11pm when the children were asleep and picked up a fight, said the officer, based on Raziya’s statement. When he picked up a butcher’s knife and threatened to kill her, Raziya ran and locked herself inside the bathroom. He kept banging on the door, demanding that she come out. By then the children woke up and began crying for their mother. Unable to bear the banging on the door, Raziya came out and pushed him down. She then snatched the knife from attacked him with it repeatedly. Nowshath’s body bore as many as 18 knife cuts, the officer said.
Some of their neighbours rushed to the spot and saw Raziya going to the police station. Raziya told police that despite sacrificing her family for him, he kept harassing her.
