Cracker-filled ice cream ball on rail track creates flutter in Kozhikode

A ball-shaped ice cream container filled with firecrackers created panic near the Kallayi railway station in Kozhikode on Friday. The bomb detection squad and police arrived at the spot for a detailed inspection following suspicion that it was a crude bomb. It was around 7.30 a.m. that the track inspection team reported the incident to the Railway Police for quick response.

While the police were recording the statements of local residents, detailed emerged of the bursting of firecrackers at a nearby house. According to police sources, the crackers were abandoned on the railway track by people who took part in a wedding celebration there.

District Police Chief (Kozhikode City) A.V. George, who visited the spot, said the issue would be taken up seriously as it posed a safety threat. He said a detailed inspection was carried out by the police to rule out suspicious elements.

The Panniyankara police have registered a case and started investigation. They have recorded the statements of local residents and details of those who took part in the wedding.

“The purpose of immediate spot inspection was to check whether it was purposely kept by someone to damage the railway track. Going by local accounts, it was recklessly dumped on the tracks,” said a Railway Police officer.
