Margao: The village panchayat of Carmona and the Public Works Department held a joint inspection of several parts of the village to find ways to tackle the issue of flooding.
The village panchayat of Carmona along with PWD (roads) SD IV, WD VI Fatorda conducted the inspection at Ankur Luis ward, Carmona which had seen water in the drains rise during monsoon due to faulty design of drainages by the PWD. Speaking to the media after the inspection, village sarpanch Allwyn Jorge said, “Every monsoon these private properties and some residential houses get flooded with rain water with water even entering some houses and roads getting submerged due to the reverse flow of rain water through the main public nullah. This has been a problem because of the PWD constructing drainages without taking into account the elevation and direction of normal flow of water through the nullah by constructing drainages at a higher height and thereby obstructing the normal flow of rain water in River Sal.”
Local residents, who have had to face the problem, asked the PWD to reconstruct the drainage after checking the elevation and slope so as to restore the normal flow of rain water into the River Sal.
One of the affected residents Balthazar Luis had also approached the panchayat’s grievance cell. The panchayat had also written to the PWD to take corrective measures.
