SA mining executive charged over tax fraud
A South Australian mining industry executive has been charged with tax fraud spanning 15 years and worth more than $38 million.
The Australian Federal Police say the man is due to front Adelaide Magistrates Court on Friday over allegedly failing to disclose overseas trust assets in his income tax returns between 1999 and 2013.
The AFP's Criminal Assets Confiscation Taskforce has also obtained restraining orders in the Supreme Court over a significant amount of assets.
Acting Commander Raegan Stewart said the charges against the 74-year-old followed a complex investigation involving joint-agency co-operation and engagement with overseas law enforcement bodies.
In Australia that involved the Australian Tax Office and the Australian Criminal Intelligence Commission.
International law enforcement agencies included those from Jersey, the United States, the United Kingdom and the British Virgin Islands.
The accused man is facing 15 charges including defrauding the Commonwealth and obtaining a financial advantage by deception.
Each offence carries a maximum 10-year prison sentence.
