'Covid passports': How can the NHS Covid Pass prove I've had both jabs?
- Published
Adults who are fully vaccinated can avoid quarantining in the UK after travelling to amber-list countries - although not France.
From the end of September, people will need to prove they have had two jabs to go to nightclubs and some other venues in England.
What is the NHS Covid Pass and can I get it?
It is a certificate that shows your vaccination and test records.
The pass can be useful for international travel and access to some events and venues in the UK.
In England, you can get the NHS Covid Pass either:
How do I get the pass?
People in England can request one via the NHS website or, if you are registered with a GP, the NHS app. (not the NHS Covid-19 app, which is used for contact tracing).
Once logged in, you can request the NHS Covid Pass. The system generates a QR code, which lasts for 28 days.
Make sure you apply via the official website or app. Do not click on unsolicited emails or texts.
People who've had both jabs can also request an NHS Covid Pass letter by calling 119. This only shows vaccination status and has no expiry date.
At the moment, under-16s can't get an NHS Covid Pass, because children aren't currently being vaccinated.
Do I need the pass to go clubbing or university?
Nightclubs in England have reopened, following the removal of most Covid restrictions and guidance.
But ministers want "higher risk" settings - including nightclubs - to make use of the NHS Covid Pass, which can prove someone has been fully vaccinated. At present this is not a legal requirement - so clubs don't have to ask for proof.
Prime Minister Boris Johnson now says he plans "to make full vaccination the condition of entry to nightclubs and other venues where large crowds gather", by the end of September.
By this point, all 18-year-olds in England will have had the chance to be fully vaccinated.
Sir Patrick Vallance - chief scientific adviser to the government - said nightclubs "are a focus for potential superspreading events" and that has already been the case in the Netherlands and Israel.
University students will get "advance warning" if they need to be vaccinated before moving to halls of residence, Dominic Raab has said. Making the jab compulsory for university students has not been ruled out by the government.
What else will the pass allow people to do?
The NHS Covid Pass - or equivalents in other parts of the UK - will allow fully vaccinated adults to avoid quarantine when they return from most amber-list countries. But even if you have the pass, you will still have to self-isolate if you arrive in the UK from France.
In addition, from 7 August in Wales double vaccinated adults will no longer have to self-isolate if a close contact tests positive for Covid.
And from 16 August fully vaccinated adults and under-18s in England also won't have to self-isolate if a close contact tests positive for Covid.
Scotland plans to introduce similar rules for adults, and is considering whether it can do the same for under-18s.
Will foreign destinations accept the NHS Covid pass?
You must check your destination's entry rules before you book - and keep checking them before you travel.
How do I prove my vaccination status in the rest of the UK?
Over-16s in Scotland can request a paper copy of their coronavirus vaccination status via the NHS inform website, or by calling 0808 196 8565.
You can download the NHS Covid Pass in Wales, or you can request a paper copy by calling 0300 303 5667, at least five days after your final dose.
The certificate in Northern Ireland can be used for travel from 1 August onwards. It is possible to apply online, but the website has experienced technical problems.
