E.each person’s individual astrological natal chart lots Layers – from the planets and signs to the houses and aspects – that help us understand our personalities and our path in life. Color is another element in our natal chart that can help us get closer to wholeness. This is called – you guessed it – color astrology.

Color astrology is essentially a mixture of astrology and color therapy, also called color therapy. While astrology is the study of the movement and cycles of the planets in their respective orbits and our individual relationships with them, says Rose Theodora, a spiritual counselor and astrologer specializing in color astrology, chromotherapy is a pseudoscientific framework that uses color for healing. She adds in color therapy that each color is associated with a certain frequency that can have a physical, psychological and emotional effect on a person.

So color astrology is a personalized way of working with color therapy. Here’s how it works: Each sign and planet are associated with specific colors, and the placement of those signs and planets in a person’s natal chart has different implications, Theodora says. When a color astrologist looks at a person’s natal chart, they are trying to determine what colors and their meanings a person can work with to heal, get more into their meaning and wholeness, and alleviate difficulties in their life.

A color astrologist determines what colors and their meanings a person can work with to heal, step into more of their purpose and wholeness, and alleviate difficulties in their life.

With this in mind, color astrology makes working with astrology more tangible as people can learn from the colors in diagrams and apply them to their lives. However, color astrology is not new either and has long been a part of Vedic astrology. And the use of color as a remedy goes back even further. (For example, the philosopher Aristotle paired colors with the different elements: earth, air, fire, and water.)

Would you like to learn more about color astrology? Below, Theodora explains what a color astrology reading entails and what colors you want to work with depending on your sun sign (which you usually look for when reading a horoscope).

This is how a color astrology reading works

A color astrology measurement is similar to a natal chart, but is seen through the color lens and varies depending on the astrologer. Theodora, for example, will look at your natal chart and transit chart (what’s happening in the cosmos right now) and ask how you feel about certain colors and which ones you feel comfortable or uncomfortable with. Based on these insights, she will “prescribe” specific colors to work with that resonate with your essence and promote growth and wholeness. And there can be different color specifications for certain areas of life such as health, fertility or money.

Depending on the planetary placements on your chart, colors have different meanings. The color gold, for example, can be a shade that builds confidence. But it really depends on the person and their specific chart. For example, Theodora tells me that gold is a comfort color that keeps me from growing and represents an attachment to what people think and the need to be liked by everyone, which she intuitively takes as work I’ve already done have.

“Silver would bring you more wholeness,” says Theodora, noting that the color could encourage me to lean more into my mystical side and help me judge what really resonates with me. That feels like a very currently a suitable recipe, as I am working on clarifying what an authentic life looks like for me and what my next goals in life will be. And silver is the color she advises me to work with to help me get there.

What colors to work with according to your sun sign

To reiterate, in color astrology there is no specific meaning associated with each color. Rather, the meaning is derived by looking at your natal chart as a whole and all of the various planetary placements. But in general, Theodora says that every sign has an element and each element is associated with certain colors. Working with the colors associated with the element of your sun sign is an easy way to harness the power of color astrology. This is how Theodora outlines it:

Watermark (Cancer, Scorpio and Pisces): Water colors like blue and gray

Earth sign (Taurus, Virgo, and Capricorn): Grounding, fall colors, such as dark brown, orange, beige, nude, and cream

Fire sign (Aries, Leo and Sagittarius): intense and saturated colors such as fuchsia, gold, red, bright orange and other fiery colors.

Air sign (Gemini, Libra, and Aquarius): Get bogged down with saturated colors, so softer pastels and metallic tones are better suited.

How to work with colors in astrology

So what does “working with a color” and the application of color astrology look like in practice? It depends on your individual natal chart and how the color astrologist recommends working with the color. As a general starting point for working with color, Theodora recommends being more conscious of the colors that you actively wear and with which you surround yourself, as each color evokes certain feelings. She notes that the use of color can especially be seen in marketing and advertising. For example, fast food restaurants are often red because it’s a stimulating color that will make you feel rushed, while a hospital may use softer colors that will calm the nervous system.

Theodora adds that only a conscious awareness of the colors associated with your sun sign, where and when they appear in your life, and the visceral response you have to them can be strong. Other ways to work with these colors can be to focus on them during meditation, wear them (via clothing, accessories, makeup, etc.), and use them to decorate your room.
