NEW DELHI: The death of a judge in Jharkhand's Dhanbad after he was allegedly mowed down on road, echoed in the Supreme Court on Thursday.
Chief Justice NV Ramana said he has spoken to the Chief Justice of the
Jharkhand High Court, who has taken up the matter on the judicial side.
Jharkhand High Court has now taken suo moto cognizance of the incident.
Video footage of the incident shows a three-wheeler ramming additional district judge
Uttam Anand from behind, while he was jogging on a deserted stretch of road in Dhanbad.
It was initially believed to be an accident, but the video has put question marks on the theory.
Watch: Judge dies after being hit from behind by vehicleSupreme Court Bar Association president Vikas Singh mentioned the incident before the CJI, and said probe into the killing of a senior judicial officer must be entrusted to the CBI.
He said the judge was targeted for denying bail to a gangster, and that amounted to 'a brazen attack on independence of judiciary.'
Video of the incident was taken by someone who had prior knowledge of the attack, Singh added.
The incident on Wednesday morning took place near the Magistrate Colony locality of Dhanbad, close to the judge's residence.
He was taken to hospital by locals, where he died.
