
Parliament Monsoon Session Live: Even as Opposition MPs continued to protest, the Lok Sabha passed the Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code (Amendment) Bill 2021 on Wednesday. After resuming proceedings at 3 pm, the House also passed two appropriation bills and was again adjourned till 4 pm.
As the standoff in Parliament continues, the Rajya Sabha has been adjourned for the day and will resume 11 am Thursday. The Opposition leaders have been protesting against the Pegasus snooping scandal, farm laws and other issues. Congress leader Rahul Gandhi denied that the Opposition was disturbing Parliament, insisting instead that they were merely “fulfilling our responsibility”.
Earlier today, leaders of Opposition parties held a meeting at Parliament to chalk out the future course of action on several issues in both the Houses. Gandhi also attended the meeting, which was chaired by Leader of Opposition in Rajya Sabha, Mallikarjun Kharge.
On Wednesday, sources said, all the opposition parties would give adjournment notices in the Lok Sabha on the Pegasus scandal. Sources in the Opposition camp have also claimed that the government side had indicated that it was ready for a discussion on any subject, barring the Pegasus revelations.
As the stand-off continues in the Parliament, the Lok Sabha has been adjourned till 4 pm.
Lok Sabha Wednesday passed the Supplementary Demands for Grants - First Batch and 2021-22 and the Demands for Excess Grants for 2017-18 bills amid sloganeering by the opposition members over Pegasus issue.
The Rajya Sabha passed the Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection of Children) Amendment Bill, 2021 Wednesday and has been adjourned till 11am tomorrow, July 29, ANI reported.
17 out of 30 members of the parliamentary standing committee on IT have written (to the Speaker) stating that we no longer trust him (Shashi Tharoor). There is no provision for the removal of the standing committee chairman: BJP MP Nishikant Dubey told ANI.
After Opposition leaders continued their protest in both the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha, Union Minister Anurag Thakur accused them of "running away from discussions." "Congress and TMC MPs tried not to let Parliament function today. They can register their protest but that too has a limit. They threw papers on Speaker, ministers & even at media gallery and showed placards," he said.
Congress leader Rahul Gandhi said that the Opposition sees the Pegasus snooping scandal as a "matter related to nationalism and treason."
"This weapon has been used against democracy. For me, it's not a matter of privacy. I see it as an anti-national act. Narendra Modi & Amit Shah Ji have attacked soul of India's democracy," he told reporters.
"We want to ask just one question. Has the Govt of India bought Pegasus? Yes or No. Did the Govt use Pegasus weapon against its own people? We have been told clearly by the Govt that no discussion will take place on Pegasus in the House," he added.

The government has sought six more months to frame rules for the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA). The Ministry of Home Affairs on Tuesday told the Lok Sabha that it has sought time till January 9, 2022 to frame the rules.
“The Citizenship (Amendment) Act, 2019 (CAA) has been notified on 12.12.2019 and has come into force w.e.f. 10.01.2020. The Committees on Subordinate Legislation, Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha, have been requested to grant further extension of time upto 09.01.2022 to frame the rules under the Citizenship (Amendment) Act, 2019,” Minister of State for Home Nityanand Rai said in a written reply to a question.
Congress leader Gaurav Gogoi had asked whether the government was aware that it had missed the deadline for framing of rules. Read the full report here.
