BENGALURU: Police shot at and injured two men who earlier this month allegedly abducted a financier-cum-auto driver from Indiranagar for ransom and later murdered him in Hosur, Tamil Nadu.
The shooting took place when a posse of Indiranagar police tried to arrest suspects Kaviraj and Ambarish near NGEF Layout, Byappanahalli on Wednesday morning. As police directed the accused to surrender, the duo attacked them. Cops opened fire in self-defence and shot the two in their knees before arresting them.
Police said the duo abducted Vijay Kumar, 48, on July 5. A financier and auto driver, Kumar wore thick gold chains and the suspects thought he had money. They kidnapped Kumar after calling him for some finance-related talks. Police suspect the abduction was planned and executed for ransom.
“Kumar’s family first thought he had gone out with friends and would return in a day. However, they filed a missing complaint on July 9,” SD Sharanappa, DCP (east), said. Some of his friends suspected Ambarish and Kaviraj, saying they had seen them with Kumar and they could have kidnapped the financier for money. Ambarish is facing 17 criminal cases and Kaviraj 12. Kaviraj is an accused in the kidnap case of former minister Varthur Prakash, reported in Kolar in December 2020.
“Kumar’s family filed another complaint on July 26, saying he could have been kidnapped for money. We questioned some associates of the suspects and learnt they had taken Kumar to Hosur,” Sharanappa said. Kumar’s body was found on a dry lakebed. tnn
