After days of speculation, BJP veteran BS Yediyurappa has resigned as the Karnataka Chief Minister and Basavaraj Somappa Bommai has replaced him to be the next Chief Minister of the state. The 61-year-old leader will take oath at 11 am on Wednesday, sources said.
Bommai was the home minister in the Yediyurappa-led government before he was elected by the Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) legislature party to be the new chief minister. During the party meeting, it was Yediyurappa who proposed Bommai’s name, which was later seconded by Karjol Ashil Eshwarappa and other BJP MLAs.
Just like Yediyurappa, Bommai is also from the politically influential Lingayat community. Hence, it was seen as a compulsion of sorts for BJP to fill Yediyurappa’s position with another Lingayat leader, given the community, 16 percent of the state’s population was not in favour of his removal.
Bommai, son of former Chief Minister of Karnataka SR Bommai, a mechanical engineering graduate and former Janata Dal (United) leader, would be the 23rd chief minister of Karnataka.
After his election by the BJP high command, he said he will strive to work for the welfare of the poor. It will be pro-people and pro-poor people governance, and he will take all measures to fight Covid-19 and floods in the state, he added.

Governor Thaawarchand Gehlot has invited Bommai to form the government and decided that he will take the oath at 11 am on Wednesday. The oath ceremony will take place at the Glass House in the Raj Bhavan. The newly appointed CM said that he alone will take the oath of office.
Later today, Bommai will chair a meeting of the cabinet, he was quoted as saying by the news agency ANI. He said he will hold a meeting with senior officers to review the Covid-19 and flood situation in the state.
