Tokyo Olympics 2020, Day 5 Highlights: Top seed in badminton Kento Momota of Japan was knocked out. Archer Deepika Kumari reaches the Round of 16 after a 6-4 win over USA's Jennifer Mucino-Fernandez in the Round of 16 Eliminations. Pooja Rani wins 5-0 against her Algerian opponent to go through to the quarter-finals. PV Sindhu booked her spot in the knockouts of badminton women's singles while Sai Praneeth's campaigns ended.

Tokyo Olympics 2020, Day 5 Highlights: Kento Momota (Japan) lost in a straight set against Heo Kwang-hee (South Korea). 21-15, 21-19 and is out of the Tokyo Olympics. Archer Deepika Kumari reaches the Round of 16 after a 6-4 win over USA’s Jennifer Mucino-Fernandez in the Round of 16 Eliminations. B Sai Praneeth’s Olympic campaign comes to an end with a 14-21, 14-21 loss to Mark Caljouw in his second group match. Pooja Rani wins 5-0 against her Algerian opponent to go through to the quarter-finals.

Archer Pravin Jadhav loses 6-0 to world champion Brady Elisson of USA in the Round of 16 Men’s Individual Elimination match after beating Galsan Bazarzhapov of 6-0 Russia in the Round of 32. Simone Biles pulled out of a second event at the Tokyo Olympics, withdrawing from the individual all-around competition to concentrate on her mental health. World no.6 PV Sindhu made short work of Ngan Li Cheung in the women’s singles group J match and defeated her 21-9, 21-16. The Indian will next face Japan’s Akane Yamaguchi in the pre-quarters. Not a great day for India in sailing — men’s skiff 49er — as Varun Thakkar and K Ganapathy end 18th, 17th and 19th in race two, three and four, respectively.

The next set of races will take place on Wednesday. Archer Tarundeep Rai defeated Oleksii Hunbin of Ukraine 6-4 but lost to  Israel’s Itay Shanny 6-5 via shootout in the Round of 16 of the men’s individual event. In rowing, Arjun Lal Jat and Arvind Singh finished sixth out of 6 in their men’s lightweight double sculls semi-final failed to qualify for the medal round race. The women’s hockey lost 1-4 to Great Britain in their women’s Pool A match as Sharmila Devi scored the only goal for India. Deepika Kumari goes up against Bhutan’s Bhu Karma in the Women’s Individual 1/32 Elimination match. In Badminton, B Sai Praneeth faces M Caljouw of the Netherlands in the men’s singles Group D. Boxer Pooja Rani goes up against Ichrak Chaib of Algeria in women’s 75kg Round of 16 bout.

Brazil beats Saudi Arabia 3-1 as with Richarlison scoring a brace (76', 90+3') and Matheus Cunha finding the back of the net in the 14th minute.

Germany drew 1-1 with Cote d'Ivoire with Eduard Loewen scoring in the 73rd minute after Benjamin Henrichs scored an own goal in the 67th minute.

Republic of Korea thrashed Honduras 6-0 with three penalties being scored - two by Uijo Hwang and one by Dujae Won. Hwang scored a hat-trick while Kangin Lee and Jinya Kim scoring a goal each.

Romania and New Zealand played out a 0-0 draw.

Novak Djokovic advanced to the fourth round with a 6-3, 6-1 win over Spanish Alejandro Davidovich Fokina.

Garbine Muguruza was knocked out after a 5-7, 1-6 loss to Elena Rybakina in an hour and 33 minutes.

'If I Die, Are You Going to be Responsible?' Daniil Medvedev Describes Struggle in Tokyo Heat

"Even from the first set I didn't feel good enough with my breathing. I felt like my diaphragm was blocked, I couldn't breathe properly," said Daniil Medvedev, who took a medical timeout and received two visits from the trainer.

Asked by the umpire if he was OK during the second set, the Russian replied: "I can finish the match, but I can die. If I die, are you going to be responsible?"

"I think it was the most humid day we had so far, maybe the hottest. The sun was pretty hot. At the end of the second set I just had darkness in my eyes. I was bending over, and I couldn't get my breathing together. I was ready to just fall down on the court," he added.

Pravin Jadhav was up against world champion Brady Ellison of USA and it was a massive task, one he couldn't match up to. Pravin started well but as his nerves took over, he hits a number of 8s while Ellison remained consistent and took the match away with ease. Elisson beat Pravin 6-0 by taking all the three sets.
