A day after the West Bengal government submitted a 95-page affidavit, the Calcutta High Court on Wednesday granted the state time to file supplementary affidavits by July 31 in connection with an NHRC inquiry committee report on alleged post-poll violence in the state.
NHRC told the High Court during the hearing on Wednesday that 16 more cases of post-poll violence have been filed by them after submitting the final report, where victims were threatened to withdraw complaints. The cases have been forwarded to the DGP of Bengal. Following this, the High Court granted the state government to file supplementary affidavits by July 31, following a prayer by it.
A five-judge bench, led by Acting Chief Justice Rajesh Bindal, is hearing the case. The next hearing is on August 2.
The West Bengal government submitted a 95-page affidavit before the Calcutta High Court on Tuesday in response to the NHRC report over post-poll violence. The NHRC committee had made scathing observations on post-poll violence and law and order situation in West Bengal in its final report submitted before the High Court on July 13.
The state government claimed in the affidavit that the NHRC committee had been “deliberately constituted to spearhead a witch hunt against the entire state machinery in West Bengal".
Meanwhile, the deceased BJP labour wing leader Avijit Sarkar’s DNA report was also submitted by the additional solicitor general before the bench today. The court had earlier directed a DNA matching of Sarkar with his brother for identification.
A second autopsy had earlier been carried out at the Command Hospital here on an order by the bench.
