Fiji, New Zealand play for rugby 7s gold

Fiji are a win against New Zealand away from defending their Olympic men's rugby sevens crown, prevailing in a tense semi-final against Argentina.

The two powerhouse nations progressed on Wednesday at Tokyo Stadium, Fiji seeking another magical moment after winning the country's first Olympic gold in emotional scenes in the sport's 2016 debut.

They'll meet at 7pm (AEST) after Argentina and Great Britain have played for bronze.

Earlier Australia played arguably their best game of the tournament in a 22-19 loss to South Africa.

That result confined Tim Walsh's side to a play-off for seventh - they'll play Canada at 5.30pm (AEST) - in what has been a frustrating campaign where the fine margins of the code have been fully exposed.

They'll rue a horror first half in their opening against Argentina, allowing four tries in after continuous errors but still only losing 29-19.

A big win over South Korea followed, before they had opportunities in tight losses against New Zealand, Fiji and South Africa.

Australia's rugby sevens women will begin their gold medal defence on Thursday.
