Met Dept says more rains soon for Delhi, NCR

With the scorching summer showing no signs of abating well into July, Delhi and surrounding areas in the National Capital Region heaved in relief as the capital received heavy rainfall early on Tuesday, of course causing water logging in many areas. The Met Department, which had been the subject of ridicule for not being able to pinpoint the date the monsoon would kiss the soil of Delhi, has promised more rains in the coming days. For the record, the southwest monsoon reached Delhi on July 13, a full fortnight behind the date of usual onset. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) was of course putting out forecasts of rain every other day in the interregnum.

But there is a Trishanku factor here. Despite 70mm rainfall in the last 24 hours, the temperature in Delhi is still high comparatively; it will be interesting to see if the showers can further bring down the temperature and soothe the people of Delhi and adjoining areas.

Further, not just Delhi, the IMD also has similar news for the residents of Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh and Himachal Pradesh, heavy showers have been forecast for the states today and the immediate future.

The IMD has predicted heavy rainfall for the next 3 days over Himachal Pradesh and issued a red alert for July 27 and 28. According to officials, heavy downfall had triggered multiple landslides in the region causing threats to both life and property.

Meanwhile, the weather department has also predicted widespread rainfall and average to heavy downpour in parts of east and central India, including central and gangetic West Bengal, Jharkhand and others areas from today.
