GUWAHATI: The Congress has questioned the effectiveness of the Northeast chief ministers’ meeting in Shillong with Union home minister Amit Shah on Saturday, after violence erupted on the tense Assam-Mizoram border soon after his departure to New Delhi.
It also expressed shock over a Twitter war between Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and his Mizoram counterpart Zoramthanga since morning in which Shah and even Prime Minister Narendra Modi was tagged.
The Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) has vehemently condemned the firing on Assam police personnel on the Mizoram-Assam border. Sources said gunshots rang out from the hilly Mizoram border in the Lailapur area of Cachar district and an Assam police security post was fired upon in which at least six policemen were killed and vehicles belonging to state government officials damaged.
“It is a matter of disgrace that just hours after Union home minister Amit Shah left Assam, such an attack happened on Assam police personnel and property of Assam government," the PCC said in a release.
As just a couple of days ago the home minister himself chaired a meeting with the CMs and chief secretaries of the NE states to discuss interstate border disputes, Assam PCC's media department chairperson Bobbeeta Sharma questioned, “What transpired between them? What were the policies to mitigate the border disputes adopted?” The Congress demanded an assurance from the government to the people residing in both the states that all disputes will be amicably settled.
The Assam Congress has criticised the fact that despite the Shillong meet on border issues, a Twitter war is going on between Sarma and Zoramthanga. Sharma said it has become a matter of great public concern as well as appalling humour that responsible persons like chief ministers, both belonging to the NDA alliance, are openly arguing with each other on Twitter handles and they have also tagged the home minister and the Prime Minister. “The BJP government seems to be running the country through Twitter handles and social media,” she said. The PCC alleged that there is no clarity on the part of the governments in both the states and at the Centre on the issues at hand. “An atmosphere of uncertainty will further complicate matters. There is also a report that a mob has manhandled a Mizo couple in the border area. The government should ensure that common people of both the states do not bear the brunt of their lackadaisical attitude,” it said in the statement, demanding a clear message from the government to resolve the border dispute.
