Gurgaon: Residents of Sector 9A fear of an outbreak of vector-borne disease as the area is still flooded after last week’s rain. The residents said that the colony was submerged in rain water on July 18-19 when the city witnessed heavy downpour. However, even after a week, the civic authority is not paying any heed to their problems and nothing has been done to clear out the floodwater.
They said rainwater got mixed with sewage and has been stagnating at various locations in the colony emanating foul smell and becoming a breeding ground for mosquitoes and other insects.
Col (Retd) RS Balwada, one of the residents, said, “Sectors parks are filled with mixed water comprising sewage and rainwater from 6 inches to 2 feet causing a serious damage to park grass, plants and trees as it weakens them. Last year also, 14 grown-up trees were badly damaged due to stagnation of water.”
Ashish Sati, another resident, said, “If the situation continues like this, we fear residents will get infected with vector-borne diseases.”
The residents alleged that the GMDA’s contractor has damaged the stormwater master drain while carrying out the flyover construction and no provision of water outlet has been ensured by the authorities before the onset of monsoon. “Our area is low-lying and every time there is rain it gets waterlogged, but what is more appalling is the civic authority’s attitude towards our problem,” said Suraj Lalit Bhola, RWA general secretary.
Meanwhile, joint commissioner Pradeep Ahlawat said that they have decided to let the rainwater percolate into the soil to recharge the groundwater table. “I have instructed the sanitation staff to carry out fumigation drive in the area,” he said.
