BJP high command will announce name of next Karnataka CM after discussions: State minister Murugesh Nirani

After the resignation of Karnataka's caretaker CM BS Yediyurappa from his post, Karnataka Minister Murugesh Nirani said that the party high command will announce the name of the next chief minister after discussions. While talking to the reporters at the Bengaluru airport, Nirani said, "We will abide by the (BJP) high command's decision. The high command will announce the name of the CM after discussions. Our agenda is to work as a party worker." (ANI)

Yediyurappa supporter allegedly commits suicide, caretaker CM expresses grief

Expressing "grief" over the alleged suicide of a supporter pained by his resignation, Karnataka's caretaker Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa on Tuesday said ups and downs are common in politics, and appealed to his followers that their regard towards him should not go to its extremity. According to reports, Rajappa (Ravi), aged about 30, from Bommalapura in Gundlupet taluk in Chamarajanagara district, has allegedly ended his life, shocked by Yediyurappa's exit.

Shikaripura protests BS Yediyurappa's exit

Within minutes of chief minister BS Yediyurappa announcing his resignation on Monday, commercial establishments in Shikaripura of Shivamogga district closed down and observed a bandh in protest. Upset with the BJP high command, residents raised slogans against the party leaders, particularly Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Though Yediyurappa had submitted his resignation on earlier occasions, this is for the first time that residents observed a bandh in protest. 5 days after headless body found, bus conductor held

The case of a mangled headless torso of an aged woman found on the railway tracks between Nidavanda and Hirehalli near Tumakuru on July 20 has been cracked with a BMTC conductor being arrested on Sunday for killing the 70-year-old woman. Her widowed daughterin-law who plotted the murder is missing. Tumakuru residents MB Balachandra, 42, contract conductor with BMTC, and Lata Ramesh, have been accused of murdering M Ningamma, a resident of Toobinagare in Mandya district. July 20, railway police found the mangled body on the tracks near Tumakuru and inspection revealed the head was missing. Postmortem confirmed it was a murder by strangulation. But the body was not identified then.

Rain forecast leaves residents of waterlogged localities wary

Bengalurean gets 16 Covid -ve messages on his phone

When Bengalurean Sajai M received a message stating he had tested negative for Covid-19 on his phone at 3.55pm on July 24, he was bewildered since he had not taken the test. Bewilderment turned to consternation since the patient’s name in the message was not his. To Sajai’s chagrin, he received 15 more such messages over the next 100 minutes. All stated he was negative but showed different names. Curiously, all the messages had come to his fancy number ending in 0000, which he had not made public. The 39-year-old is now reconciled to the whole thing being a technical glitch. “Looks like someone is misusing RT-PCR tests. This must be probed,” said Sajai. He did take the Covid test in April, prior to a business trip but had registered through another number.

Karnataka’s new vax registration app delayed; website too not user-friendly

The state health department’s plan to launch a customised Co-Win application on a pilot basis in Mysuru city on Monday was put off. The app was to provide Karnataka-specific features, but users were disappointed as the app was unavailable on Google Play Store. Officials did not say why the app wasn’t available. The website too did not have the option to select a vaccination centre or date of choice. Only a pincode-based allotment facility was provided. The new interface of the app was developed with the aim of helping people select a vaccination centre of their choice. This would help staff design vaccination drives based on requirements and availability of doses.

Colleges reopen, mixed response on first day

Higher educational institutions that reopened across Bengaluru on Monday rolled out the red carpet for students, although the turnout was far from impressive in many colleges. Some colleges like Seshadripuram Main College recorded attendance of around 1,500 students — 55% of those on the rolls. “We welcomed them with roses and chocolates,” said Meera HN, principal. “We hope such a closure doesn’t happen again. Students were enthusiastic because exam dates have been announced. They also wanted to meet up with friends.”
