Face ID on Macs is something that many fans are hoping for for a long time but Apple is yet to do anything about it. Mark Gurman, a renowned tech journalist for Bloomberg, has now revealed that it could happen in a couple of years. He made the revelation in the latest edition of his newsletter Power On.

Gurman believes that Apple does have an ultimate goal of bringing Face ID to all of its devices but is not doing so due to different reasons. Mac notebooks have not offered Face ID yet as screens on these machines are too thin for depth sensor implementation. It will have to figure out a way to overcome this situation to be able to offer both.

In terms of iPhone SE and iPad non-Pro models, Apple is deliberately opting for Touch ID as it helps in cost-cutting while keeping the devices secure at the same time. It is a cheaper alternative to implementing Face ID, resulting in a price bump for these devices. Apple is further said to be exploring the possibility of embedding the front camera into the display but if it ever happens, it will most likely be reserved for expensive models.

"I think implementing Face ID in all of its major devices is the company’s ultimate goal. If it were possible, Apple would have already nixed Touch ID. But it has had to stick around for a couple of reasons. On the iPhone SE and non-Pro iPads, it’s a cheaper alternative that lets Apple cut costs while still offering security. On Mac laptops, the screens are too thin to implement the necessary depth sensor."
