BENGALURU: The pontiffs of mutts across Karnataka plan to form a new organisation, Mathagala Mahasabha, that will work for people’s causes. Shivamurthy Murugha Sharanaru of Chitradurga’s Murugha Mutt suggested the idea of bringing mutts under a single platform at a convention of seers on Sunday.
At the meeting, seers expressed solidarity with BS Yediyurappa amid speculation of leadership change.
“Seers of all mutts in the state should come together to launch Mathagala Mahasabha, which will work for society’s welfare and meet frequently like Dharma Sansad. Let us launch the organisation,” Murugha Sharanaru said at the meeting. He told TOI that pontiffs of many mutts had welcomed the proposal. The gathering saw seers from about 400 religious institutions. Many participants said that mutts should be active in responding to social and political issues so that people get justice.
Some pontiffs like Rudramuni Shivacharya Swamiji of the Mushkuru Mutt suggested BJP could consider appointing a seer as the new chief minister. He also put forth the idea of launching a regional party of pontiffs. The Murugha mutt head said that the party proposal was not a serious discussion.
