AR units organise tree plantation drives

Imphal, July 25 2021: Headquarters Inspector General Assam Rifles (South) organised an afforestation drive at its Mantripukhri Garrison on Sunday.

According to PRO IGAR (S), Major General Alok Naresh planted a sapling at the Garrison's Environmental Park to mark the launch of the afforestation drive.

Addressing the troops on the occasion, Alok Naresh stated that the Assam Rifles is organising several awareness programmes on environmental protection as well as tree plantation drives across the North East region.

The general officer expressed his belief that afforestation can help in maintaining ecological balance.

The tree plantation drive saw active participation of troops and their families including children.

On the other hand, Maram Battalion of Jwalamukhi sector/IGAR (E) launched Sohra Afforestation drive by planting trees at its garrison, COBs and nearby villages.

Troops of battalion planted 3000 trees and kick started the drive, said an AR release.

During the event, the officiating commandant highlighted about the importance of nature and emphasised that nature should not be taken for granted and must be respected for its values.

44 Assam Rifles of 22 Sector also organised a plantation drive at Tamenglong town and various other parts of the district.

According to PIB Defence, the unit kick started the drive by planting a sapling at Azuiram village followed by jawans of the unit planting fresh 5200 saplings.

The drive aims at revisiting last year's planted saplings to ascertain their growth.

One of the objective of this drive was to spread awareness among locals and troops about importance of trees and also the secondary advantages acquired like prevention of soil erosion and landslides, PIB said in a release adding that local variety of trees were planted to increase the survivability rate of the saplings.
