Senior actress Jayanthi passed away on Monday in Bengaluru due to age-related ailments. She was 76.

Veteran actress Jayanthi passed away on Monday in Bengaluru due to age-related ailments. She was 76. She made her full-fledged acting debut with the Kannada movie Jenu Goodu in 1963 and has more than 500 movies to her credit as an actor in Telugu, Tamil, Kannada, and Malayalam film industries.

She is one of the rare actors in the down South to feature in the films of major superstars. She portrayed major characters in notable number of movies, which were led by actors NT Ramarao, MG Ramachandra, Raj Kumar and Rajinikanth, etc.

Jayanthi has acted in over 30 films with acting great Dr Rajkumar in Kannada. Some of the memorable films of the duo are Paropakari, Jedara Bale, Chakratheertha, Bettada Huli, Sri Krishnadevaraya, and evergreen Kasturi Nivasa to name a few. She also carved a niche for herself in the Kannada film industry with films like Miss Leelavathi, Edakallu Guddada Mele, Manassinanthe Mangalya, Thulasi earning the nickname ‘Abhinaya Sharade’, which means the goddess of acting.

Her work in superhits like Pedarayudu, Swathi Kiranam, Kodama Simham, Justice Chowdary and Kondaveeti Simham brought her recognition among the Telugu audiences.

In Tamil, she has delivered powerful performances in films like Ethir Neechal, Karnan, Kalai Kovil, Mugaraasi, Bama Vijayam among others. Her Malayalam films were Palattu Koman, Kattupookkal, Kaliyodam, Lakshaprabhu, Karutha Pournami, Vilakkappetta Kani. In Hindi, she is known for Teen Bahuraniyan, which is the remake of Bama Vijayam. She had also shared screen space with Shammi Kapoor in Tumse Achha Kaun Hai.

Fans, members of the film fraternity and political leaders have expressed condolence over the passing of Jayanthi.

Kannada movie star Puneeth Rajkumar said her demise was a personal loss for him. “Jayanthi ‘amma’ acted in over 500 films. She has acted in over 30 films with my father (Dr Rajkumar). She was very close to my family. She was part of all celebrations in our family. When my father was taken to the forest, she used to phone us every day and enquire about our well-being. She used to perform pujas for the betterment of our family. I feel lucky to have acted with her in my film Raaj. Her demise has caused me and my family a lot of pain. She will already live in our memories. Let’s pray for her soul to find peace,” said Puneeth in a statement.

Former Karnataka chief minister BS Yediyurappa also condoled the death of Jayanthi. He said her passing is an “irreplaceable loss” to the film industry.
