Coronavirus Third Wave India Live Update, Coronavirus Statistics India Live News: India has been reporting below 50,000 new Coronavirus infections for the past month. The Covid-19 situation has improved since March and April when the second wave hit the nation; new cases even shot up to over 4 lakh (on May 1). Covid-19 deaths and positivity rate have also improved. India reported 39,361 new Coronavirus infections in the last 24 hours, taking the total tally of Covid-19 cases to 3,14,11,262; the daily positivity rate increased to above 3 per cent after 35 days, according to data from the Union health ministry on Monday. The number of active cases in the country has also increased to 4,11,189, and now accounts for 1.31 per cent of the total infections. Kerala and Maharashtra, and some states in the northeastern states have been reporting a surge for the past few weeks, which is a concern. Especially, Kerala has been witnessing a spike in new infections. It has triggered a fear of third wave among people. Last week, India saw 2.7 lakh new Covid-19 cases, with a daily average of around 38,000 cases. Kerala alone accounted for 1,10,593 cases out of India’s total last week. The state has seen a sharp rise of 15.7% in coronavirus infections in the last seven days.

Meanwhile, the group of officials empowered with formulating India’s Covid emergency strategy has asked the government to prepare for a level of 4-5 lakh cases in a day in the next surge. The group said all necessary measures should be taken to contain the numbers of new infections below 50,000. The Covid group asked the government to ramp up the Covid-19 vaccination drive; it also advised people to follow appropriate Covid behaviour to keep cases low.

In a positive development, Delhi has further relaxed Covid restrictions. Delhi Metro has been allowed to operate with 100 per cent seating capacity from today, while in the case of cinemas, theaters, and multiplexes, the seating capacity will remain 50 per cent. The DDMA has allowed all most all activities which were restricted since April 19, except educational institutes and public gatherings, from Monday, though with strict Covid-19 guidelines.

Meanwhile, many states have allowed schools to reopen for physical classes, though with strict Covid restrictions. Schools in Punjab have reopened for Classes 10-12, and Classes 9-11 in Gujarat.

Hoarding COVID medicines: SC refuses to stay proceedings against Gambhir foundation

The Supreme Court Monday refused to stay the proceedings against BJP MP Gautam Gambhir's foundation in a case relating to illegally procuring and distributing COVID-19 medicines. Coronavirus India Live Updates: Mixed AstraZeneca-Pfizer shot boosts Covid antibody level - study

A mixed vaccination of first AstraZeneca and then a Pfizer COVID-19 shot boosted neutralizing antibody levels by six times compared with two AstraZeneca doses, a study from South Korea showed. The study involved 499 medical workers - 100 receiving mixed doses, 200 taking two doses of the Pfizer/BioNTech shot and the remainder getting two AstraZeneca shots. All showed neutralizing antibodies, which prevent the virus from entering cells and replicating, and the result of the mixed schedule of vaccines showed similar amounts of neutralizing antibodies found from the group that received two Pfizer shots. A British study last month showed similar results - an AstraZeneca shot followed by Pfizer produced the best T-cell responses, and a higher antibody response than Pfizer followed by AstraZeneca. The data provides further support for the decision of several countries to offer alternatives to AstraZeneca as a second shot after the vaccine was linked to rare blood clots. (Reuters)

Coronavirus India Live Updates: Australia sees Covid-19 cases climb, police warn against protest repeat

Australia's most populous state reported a rise in new COVID-19 cases on Monday despite a weeks-long stay-at-home order, while police vowed to crack down on any repeat of a anti-lockdown protest which turned violent at the weekend. New South Wales, which has had more than 5 million people in Sydney city under lockdown for a month, reported 145 new cases of the virus, from 141 a day earlier, as it struggles to contain an outbreak of the highly contagious Delta variant. The state also reported two new deaths, a man and a woman both in their 80s, taking its total fatalities to 10 since the flare-up began a month ago and the national total to 920 since the start of the pandemic. Of particular concern, 51 of the newly diagnosed were active in the community before testing positive, raising the risk of transmission. The authorities have said they want that number near zero before lifting the city's most restrictive lockdown of the pandemic at a July 30 target date. 'We might need to go harder in some areas and release some settings in others,' state premier Gladys Berejiklian said at a televised news conference, apparently referencing five government areas of Sydney's suburbs at the epicentre of the outbreak. Berejiklian added that she would give an update on movement restrictions in the next few days. At the weekend, thousands of people marched in an anti-lockdown protest which turned violent in central Sydney, an event that state chief health officer Kerry Chant called 'distressing'. As images and videos of the protest circulated on social media, including one image of a man apparently punching a police horse in the head, state police commissioner Mick Fuller said some 10,000 people had called the police hotline to report people suspected of breaking lockdown orders. The calls to police were 'an amazing outcry by the community, not just in terms of their disgust at the protest but at the way the police were treated', said Fuller. Police knew of plans for a repeat protest and similar behaviour 'won't be tolerated again', he added. Victoria state, also under lockdown, reported 11 new cases, although all were in quarantine during their infectious period. Authorities said they would decide the next day whether to lift restrictions as hoped. Neighbouring South Australia said it was on track to exit its snap one-week lockdown on Wednesday, after reporting one new local case, also in quarantine through their infectious period. (Reuters)

Coronavirus India Live Updates: Improvement in Odisha's Covid situation, says official as state logs 1,637 new cases, 62 deaths

The COVID-19 situation in Odisha has "significantly" improved over the past one month as 1,637 new cases were recorded on Monday, down from 3,554 exactly a month ago, a health department official said. The caseload in the coastal state has risen to 9,69,185, he said. Sixty-two fresh fatalities pushed the toll to 5,574, the official said, adding that the list of casualties issued on Monday does not reflect deaths occurring on any particular day. "It gives details of past deaths for which the death audit process has been duly completed and the cause of death has been identified as due to COVID-19," the Health and Family Welfare Department said on Twitter. Justifying his claim of "significant improvement in the situation", the official said the daily test positivity rate (TPR) in the state has dropped to 2.19 per cent from 5.17 per cent on June 26. Of the 1,637 new positive cases, 949 were recorded in quarantine centres and the rest detected during contact tracing. Khurda district, of which the state capital Bhubaneswar is a part, reported 350 new cases, followed by Cuttack at 250 and Angul at 100. Gajapati is the only district that did not record any fresh case. Of the 62 fatalities, 42 were registered in Khurda district, ten in Sundergarh, four in Keonjhar and two in Jajpur.  One patient each succumbed to the infection in Ganjam, Jagatsinghpur, Kandhamal and Puri. "Rojer and his partner Wesley Koolhof have been withdrawn from the men's doubles event, and their opponents Marcus Daniell and Michael Venus of New Zealand receive a walkover into quarterfinals. All the three athletes are not residents of the Olympic Village, which has reported 16 cases since it was opened. Coronavirus India Live Updates: Early antiviral response in nose may determine severity of Covid-19, says study

The course of severe COVID-19 may be determined by the body's antiviral response to initial infection, according to a study which opens up new avenues for early drug interventions that could prevent severe disease. Researchers from Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and Harvard University in the US analysed whether the path towards severe disease could start much earlier than expected -- perhaps even within the initial response created when the virus enters the nose. They studied cells taken from nasal swabs of patients at the time of their initial COVID-19 diagnosis, comparing patients who went on to develop mild COVID-19 to those who progressed into more severe disease and eventually required respiratory support. The findings, published in the journal Cell, showed that patients who went on to develop severe COVID-19 exhibited a much more muted antiviral response in the cells collected from early swabs, compared to patients who had a mild course of disease. "Our findings suggest that the course of severe COVID-19 may be determined by the body's intrinsic antiviral response to initial infection, opening up new avenues for early interventions that could prevent severe disease," said study co-senior author Jose Ordovas-Montanes, from Harvard Medical School. Coronavirus India Live Updates: Indonesia's easing of COVID-19 curbs seen driven by economics

Indonesia's decision to relax some COVID-19 curbs this week, despite reporting record-high deaths in recent days, is being driven by social and economic concerns rather than epidemiological advice, public health experts said on Monday. As the country grapples with the worst coronavirus outbreak in Asia, President Joko Widodo announced on Sunday that while overall curbs in place since July would be extended for a week, some measures would be eased. Businesses, including salons, garages, traditional markets and restaurants with outdoor areas will now be allowed to conditionally reopen, while malls will be permitted to operate at 25% capacity outside of designated higher-risk "red zones". "The decision doesn't seem to be related to the pandemic, but to economics," said Pandu Riono, an epidemiologist at the University of Indonesia, urging people to maintain health protocols. Hospitals have been filled with patients in the past month, particularly on the densely populated island of Java and in Bali, but the president on Sunday said infections and hospitaloccupancy had declined, without specifying by how much. The move to ease some curbs comes as the government has faced pressure from business groups to act to avoid mass layoffs, and with several relatively small-scale street demonstrations last week. Coronavirus India Live Updates: Southeast Asia COVID-19 cases hit new highs, Malaysian doctors protest

Thailand reported a record number of coronavirus cases on Monday, while Malaysia has notched up more than 1 million infections, as the virulent Delta variant carves a deadly path through Southeast Asia - now a global epicentre for the virus. Thailand had 15,376 new coronavirus cases, a daily record for a second consecutive day in the nation of more than 66 million. Malaysia, which has one of Southeast Asia's highest per capita infection rates, reported on Sunday 17,045 new cases, bringing the total to 1,013,438 and nearly 8,000 deaths, despite a being under lockdown since June. Like many parts of the region of more than 650 million people, Malaysian hospitals and medical staff have borne the brunt of the outbreak amid shortages of beds, ventilators and oxygen. Thousands of Malaysian contract doctors on Monday staged a walkout over the terms of their employment, though they pledged patients would not be affected by the protest. The doctors, who want permanent postings, as well as better pay and benefits, said an offer by Prime Minister MuhyiddinYassin to extend their contracts did not go far enough. Malaysia's vaccine rollout, however, has outpaced that of many neighbours, with about 16.9% of its 32 million people fully inoculated. Thailand's government last week imposed tighter lockdown measures in the capital, Bangkok, and 12 high-risk provinces, suspending most domestic fights and expanding curfew area. The Thai central bank has said the wave of infections is expected to reduce gross domestic product in the tourism-dependent country by up to 2% this year. (Reuters)

Coronavirus India Live Updates: French parliament OKs restaurant COVID pass, vaccine rules

France's parliament approved a law early Monday requiring special virus passes for all restaurants and domestic travel and mandating vaccinations for all health workers. Both measures have prompted protests and political tensions. President Emmanuel Macron and his government say they are needed to protect vulnerable populations and hospitals as infections rebound and to avoid new lockdowns. The law requires all workers in the health care sector to start getting vaccinated by Sept. 15, or risk suspension.  It also requires a 'health pass' to enter all restaurants, trains, planes and some other public venues. It initially applies to all adults, but will apply to everyone 12 and older starting Sept. 30. To get the pass, people must have proof they are fully vaccinated, recently tested negative or recently recovered from the virus. Paper or digital documents will be accepted. The law says a government decree will outline how to handle vaccination documents from other countries. The bill was unveiled just six days ago. Lawmakers worked through the night and the weekend to reach a compromise version approved by the Senate on Sunday night and by the National Assembly after midnight. The rules can be applied through Nov. 15, depending on the virus situation. (AP)

Coronavirus India Live Updates: South Africa loosens COVID restrictions as new cases see dip

South African President Cyril Ramaphosa has announced the lifting of certain coronavirus-restrictions, including relaxation on inter-provincial travel, sale of alcohol and larger public gatherings, as the country recorded a dip in new COVID-19 cases. In an address to the nation on Sunday evening, Ramaphosa said South Africa, with immediate effect, will move to Level 3 from the current Level 4 of the five-level lockdown strategy. He said the Level 4 restrictions, which have been in place for a month now, were being lifted as there was a reduction in new infections and deaths in the third wave of the pandemic. He said some restrictions would still remain in place as fears persist regarding the highly transmissible delta variant. (PTI)
