Car Waving Large Trump Flag Drives Onto Minnesota State Capitol During Democrat's Rally

Video from the Minnesota State Capitol shows a car driving onto the south mall of the grounds as a person waves a large Trump 2024 flag out of the driver's seat window during a rally hosted by a Democratic state representative.

Footage from the scene shows multiple people going up to the vehicle after it parked itself in front of the Capitol building in St. Paul on Monday morning. The driver reportedly fled the area, driving over the lawn of the Capitol until the car was stopped by police.

Local outlets reported that the driver shouted, "I am a white woman! There is only one race!" at state troopers after she was detained. Capitol Security officials held the driver at the scene until paramedics and mental health specialists arrived to speak with the driver.

State Representative John Thompson, a Democrat, was holding a news conference alongside his supporters at the time of the incident.

At the event, Thompson announced he had no plans to resign amid bipartisan calls for him to step down over past allegations of domestic abuse.

In a series of statements made over the weekend, top Minnesota Democrats, including Governor Tim Walz and House Speaker Melissa Hortman, called for Thompson's resignation after the resurfacing of several police reports that showed the state representative had been accused of choking and hitting a girlfriend on multiple occasions.

Thompson has also recently come under fire after he was pulled over for a traffic stop, which he alleged was racially motivated.

The state representative, who entered politics after his friend Philando Castile was fatally shot by police during a traffic stop in 2016, was pulled over by St. Paul police on July 4. Thompson accused officers of racially profiling, a claim that the police chief has demanded Thompson apologize for.

Police say Thompson personally apologized to the sergeant over the weekend, but Thompson called it a "private conversation" where the two didn't "agree on everything."

Some of the demonstrators at the Monday event called it a double standard that the driver with the Trump flag was not arrested on the scene.

"White privilege! White privilege! Treat her like she's Black! Put her in handcuffs!" people were heard yelling at the officers on the scene.

Newsweek reached out to the Minnesota Department of Public Safety for comment but did not hear back before publication.
