The Hundred: Matt Parkinson stars as Originals beat Phoenix for first win

Manchester Originals' Matt Parkinson bamboozled Birmingham Phoenix with a sensational spell of leg-spin bowling as the visitors became the first team to be bowled out in The Hundred at Emirates Old Trafford.

Parkinson took 4-9 - including three in a four-ball spell - from 19 balls.

Manchester got off to a rapid start in reply, being 43-1 after the 25-ball powerplay, largely thanks to Phil Salt's 11-ball 22.

Jos Buttler made 30, but was bowled with the Originals needing three to win, leaving Carlos Brathwaite to pump a four down the ground and secure a six-wicket victory with 27 balls to spare.

They join three other teams - including Birmingham - on two points, with Oval Invincibles top of the men's competition with three points.

The wicket was used in England's Twenty20 win against Pakistan on Tuesday - a match that saw 11 wickets fall to spin - and in the women's Hundred game between Manchester and Birmingham earlier on Sunday.

Birmingham won that game by 20 runs to pick up their first win of the competition.

'It was mint to get Livingstone out'

Matt Parkinson is a name that has been on the lips of England fans for the last couple of years, and definitely more recently after impressing during the recent Pakistan limited-overs series.

The 24-year-old had his Lancashire team-mate Liam Livingstone - who has been in fine form for England in recent weeks - caught at short third with his first ball.

It was a wicket Parkinson called "mint", saying Livingstone had been winding him up for the last week about batting "halfway down the wicket" due to the slow pace that Parkinson bowls at.

He later turned to bowl Chris Cooke with an absolute beauty, that pitched outside leg stump, and spun past the defence of Cooke to hit off stump.

Tom Helm was caught in the covers two balls later, before Imran Tahir was given out lbw on review next ball.

It capped an impressive day for Parkinson, with BBC radio commentator Alex Hartley calling his performance "absolutely outstanding".

'An horrific wicket'

During the match England all-rounder, and Northern Superchargers captain, Ben Stokes tweeted "what an horrific wicket at Old Trafford".

Used pitches tend to be slower in nature, allowing for more spin, which makes strokeplay and timing the ball more difficult for batters, in turn leading to low-scoring matches.

"Is that what we want to see in The Hundred?", asked BBC radio commentator Stephan Shemilt.

"That was terrific entertainment and great skill from Matt Parkinson, but is this what this competition wants?

"Do we want to see raging turning pitches where a side struggles to get to 87?"

Spinners guide Phoenix women to first win

Phoenix women made 113-9, with their captain and England wicketkeeper Amy Jones top-scoring with an explosive 17-ball 31, while spinners Emma Lamb took 3-16 and Sophie Ecclestone 2-14.

India's Twenty20 captain Harmanpreet Kaur threatened to win the game for Manchester with an unbeaten 49 but Kirstie Gordon (3-14), Abtaha Maqsood (2-14) and Erin Burns combined to great effect to restrict the hosts to 93-8 - the lowest total in the women's competition so far.

Birmingham are one of four teams on two points, with Oval Invincibles top with four points after their 15-run win over London Spirit earlier on Sunday.

Manchester, who lost to the Invincibles in the inaugural Hundred game on Wednesday, are sixth in the eight-team table.

Root v Stokes - what's to come on Monday

The Hundred continues tomorrow with two of England's stars coming head-to-head.

Ben Stokes lost to international team-mate Jonny Bairstow on Saturday, but will have another chance to get one over a mate when he plays against Test captain Joe Root at Trent Bridge.

That game is at 18:30 BST, with the women's game preceding it at 15:00.
