After months of rumbling, the Congress leadership on Saturday appointed Bhupen Kumar Borah as chief of Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC).

All India Congress Committee (AICC) has also appointed Rana Goswami, Kamalakhya Dey Purkayastha and Jakir Hussain Sikdar as working presidents of APCC.

After the Congress party's dismal performance in the recently held assembly polls, Pradesh Congress president Ripun Bora had resigned after the party's defeat in the assembly elections earlier this year.

Borah has been elected twice to the state assembly, but this time he lost to Amiyo Bhuyan of BJP from Bihpuria constituency. He had lost from the same constituency in 2016 as well.

As AICC secretary from Assam, Borah has been the party in-charge of election in several northeastern states. He was a general secretary of Dibrugarh University students' union and later became president of Assam Pradesh Youth Congress.

Nameirakpam Loken Singh has been appointed as interim president of the Manipur unit of Congress following the resignation of party leader Govindas Konthoujam as the Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) president a few days ago.
