MADURAI: A team from the
National Investigation Agency (
NIA) conducted a search in the house of S Abdullah -- who was arrested in connection with his
Facebook posts -- near
Teppakulam in Madurai on Saturday morning.
Abdullah, a tuition master, from Vivekanandar Street near Tamilan Street in the Old Ramnad Road had posted many Facebook posts between March 23 and 25, instigating people on religious grounds to wage a war against India and establish a caliphate. The messages were threatening the unity, security and sovereignty of the country, police officials said.
He was arrested by the Teppakulam police on April 4 for the social media posts after registering a case. The police reported the case to the NIA, which registered a separate case on May 21. Investigation revealed that he was a supporter of the fundamentalist group Hizb-ut-Tahrir and was seeking support of people to wage jihad against India to establish Islamist rule.
The team reached his rented house around 5.30am and quizzed his wife Nasreen Taj. A search was conducted in Nasreen Taj’s mother’s house located in the next street.
Nasreen Taj told TOI that the NIA had searched the house for material evidence but had not found anything.
The mother of two said that she had got married to Abdullah, a native of Tirunelveli district, seven years ago. He has a diploma in engineering (fire and safety) and was taking tuition to kids in the locality. Nasreen is teaching Arabic to Muslim kids.
