Mamata congratulates Manipuri girl Mirabai Chanu for winning Silver Medal for India in Tokyo

Kolkata, Jul 24 (UNI) West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Saturday congratulated

Mirabai Chanu for winning silver medal for India in weightlig in Tokyo Olympics.

Twenty-six-year-old Saikhom Mirabai Chanu from Manipur created history winning India’s first

medal at the Tokyo Olympics when she clinched silver in women’s 49 kg weightlifting event on

Saturday.

Chanu thus becomes the second ever Indian female weightlifter after Karnam Malleswari to

win an Olympic weightlifting medal.

Malleswari had won a bronze at the 2000 Sydney Olympics and thus became the first ever

female from India to win a medal at the quadrennial event.

" Heartiest congratulations to Mirabai Chanu on winning the silver medal in the Women's

49kg weightlifting category at Tokyo Olympics," Bengal CM said.

" You have made all of us very, very proud. Your achievements are an inspiration for all,"

added Ms Banerjee.
