Deepika Kumari and Pravin Jadhav’s mixed team ran into the top seeds Korea and the quarters and the Indians were no match. Koreans won 6-2 to move to the semis. Sharath Kamal and Manika Batra lost to Yun Ju Lin and Ching Cheng of Chinese Taipei straight games in their Table Tennis mixed doubles round of 16 match. The Indian men’s hockey team defeated New Zealand 3-2 in their first match in Pool A. While Indian archers Deepika Kumari and Pravin Jadhav overcame the higher-ranked team of Chinese Taipei in missed team event pre-quarters, it was not a good start for the country at the shooting range with both Elavenil Valarivan and Apurvi Chandela failing to qualify for the finals in the Women’s 10m Air Rifle Qualification round. Likmabam Sushila Devi lost to Eva Csernoviczki of Hungary in Women’s 48kg Round of 32 elimination bout, thus ending India challenge in Judo. As far as women’s hockey is concerned, India lost to the Netherlands 1-5.

Javad Foroughi has become the oldest Iranian athlete to win an Olympic medal, earning gold in men’s 10-meter air pistol.
Foroughi set an Olympic record with 244.8 points, finishing 6.9 ahead of silver medalist Damir Mikec of Serbia. China’s Pang Wei, the 2008 gold medalist, took bronze.
The 41-year-old Foroughi surpasses Iranian weightlifter Mahmoud Namdjou, who was 38 when he took bronze at the 1956 Melbourne Games.
Foroughi, ranked fourth in the world, qualified fifth and immediately jumped to the lead in the finals with a series of shots in the 10-ring. He led Mikec by 4.2 points entering the final two shots and celebrated by waving his towel before kneeling on it to pray.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi hailing weightlifter Mirabai Chanu’s silver medal win in the Tokyo Olympics, said that India is elated by her stupendous performance and that it couldn’t have asked for a happier start to the grand sporting event. Chanu became the first Indian weightlifter to win silver medal in Olympics.
