At least 125 are dead in Maharashtra, India, after a monsoon caused floods and landslides, according to reports.
The area is being bombarded with the heaviest rain in four decades, with storms lasting days.
In Taliye, a village south of Mumbai, at least 42 were dead following mudslides.
“About 40 people are still trapped. The possibility of rescuing them alive is thin as they’ve been trapped in mud for more than 36 hours,” a local official told Reuters.
One weather station recorded a record 23.6 inches of rain. The downpour left local officials with no choice but to release water from nearly overflowing dams.
The Maharashtra state government said over 90,000 had been rescued from floods.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi said he was “anguished” in a tweet.
“Anguished by the loss of lives due to a landslide in Raigad, Maharashtra,” he said. “My condolences to the bereaved families. I wish the injured a speedy recovery.”
