Disappointing start for Indian women's hockey team as they suffered a 1-5 defeat against Netherlands in their opening Pool A match. The World No. 1 team dominated the proceedings from the word go, but India were successful to keep them level at 1-1 at the halftime break. The third quarter changed the scenario completely with the Dutch hammering in three goals in it. The Netherlands added one more in the fourth and final quarter, to start their campaign on a high.

Two late goals in the third quarter took the game away from the Indian team. From 1-1 at the halftime break, India now trail 1-4 going into the final quarter. The Netherlands are playing a beautiful free-flowing game in the middle.

No goals in the second quarter. Good defensive game from India as Netherlands kept the pressure near their D. The Dutch failed to convert 4 penalty-corners in the first half, with one ending with hitting India's goal post. It's even-steven goal wise so far.

It's 1-1 at the end of the first quarter. Netherlands took an early lead through a field goal in the 6th minute by No. 10 Albers, but the lead did not last long. Four minutes later, India skipper Rani tapped in the equaliser for her team. A good fast paced game so far.

Women's Pool A - India vs Netherlands gets underway...

India's slim hopes for a table tennis medal in mixed doubles vanished in no time but Manika Batra and Sutirtha Mukherjee made promising starts to their women's singles campaign at the Tokyo Olympics here on Saturday. World number 62 Manika returned to beat 94th-ranked Tin-Tin Ho of Britain 4-0 in her singles opener while 98th-ranked Sutirtha made a strong impression on her Olympics debut with a come from behind 4-3 win against 78th-ranked Linda Bergstrom of Sweden.

Indian boxer Vikas Krishan (69kg) was out-punched 0-5 and left with a bloodied eye by local favourite Sewonrets Quincy Mensah Okazawa in his opening bout of the Olympic Games on Saturday, a thoroughly disappointing start for the nine-strong boxing team. The 29-year-old Krishan sustained a cut below his left eye in the high-voltage clash, which, according to team sources, he competed with a shoulder niggle.
