Snow falls in Queensland as Australians shiver through cold snap that will drag on for a week - here's what to expect where you live

  • Stanthorpe in southern Queensland has had its first snow in two years on July 21
  • A cold snap is sweeping across Australia as freezing temperatures and winds hit
  • Perth has broken its July record rainfall, with more than a week left in the month
  • Thursday will see Sydney and Brisbane reach as low as 4C and Canberra hit -4C
  • Central NSW, parts of VIC and parts of QLD will reach lows of 0C as well

Snow has fallen in a remote Queensland town for the first time in two years as Australians continue to shiver through subzero temperatures.

A video captured at Eukey town hall, south of Stanthorpe in southern Queensland, shows snow grains and sleet falling on July 21.

Brisbane experienced winds up to 40kmph on Wednesday morning and forecasters predicted the mercury could fall as low as five degrees on Thursday.

'It's likely to be the coolest of this particular burst of cold weather with the minimum temperature dropping to around 5C in Brisbane,' Ms Hoff said to Courier Mail.

'We're likely to see widespread frost through the southern, eastern and central parts of Queensland.'

As Queensland experiences freezing temperatures, the rest of Australia will be just as cold.

Perth broke its July rainfall record on July 20, and more wet weather is expected for the Western Australian capital.

It copped 184.2mm of rain as of July 20, after 18 straight days of downpour - eclipsing the previous record of 182.6mm in 2001.

Weatherzone meteorologist Craig McIntosh told Daily Mail Australia the rain in WA would ease up over the next few days but would return with the next front on Friday.

'There's been quite a lot of rain in Perth so flooding is possible overnight but there's a low chance,' he said.

Earlier this month some streets in Perth and southern parts of WA were submerged in water as floods swept through.

A home in the coastal town of Eagle Bay, 256km south of Perth, had its entire roof torn off by what locals described as a 'tornado'.

The city is expected to be drenched with up to 200mm this month in total, with more than a week still to go of July.

Meanwhile, a cold front is sweeping across the south-east with hazardous winds and freezing conditions to hit New South Wales on Thursday.

Warnings for damaging surf conditions have been put in place for parts of NSW while Sydney is set to have a minimum of just 4C on Thursday.

The Bureau of Meteorology's Dean Narramore said Victoria will see similar weather with hail and snow forecast.

Temperatures are expected to fall below 0C on Thursday morning for parts of central NSW, Victoria and even in Queensland, according to the BoM

'The front is currently racing across Victoria and Tasmania with a band of rain and cold winds,' he said.

'Much colder temperatures will follow the front with small hail, thunderstorms and snow to low levels.

Temperatures are expected to fall below 0C on Thursday morning for parts of central NSW, Victoria and even in Queensland, according to the BoM.

Brisbane will also cop the cold weather with a minimum of just 5C forecast for Thursday and 9C on Friday.

Adelaide will also have chilly weather with thunderstorms expected for Thursday and temperatures hanging around 13C in the coming days.

Temperatures will stay at a maximum of 13C in the Tasmanian capital with some showers also expected for Hobart.

Canberra will be the coldest with -4C forecast as the minimum on Thursday with the city reaching tops of 11C on Wednesday and Thursday.

As always the Top End will escape the miserable weather and see sunny days reaching 30C and higher over the next week.
