Foxconn Electronics (Hon Hai), Foxtron Vehicle Technologies and Japan-based motor maker Nidec are in talks for establishing a Taiwan-based joint venture to develop, produce and market motor-based powertrains for use in electric vehicles (EVs) and automotive electromechanical products, according to Foxconn.

Foxtron Vehicle is a joint venture established by Foxconn and Yulon Motor specifically for operating MIH, a software/hardware-integrated open platform for developing EVs.

The three parties will jointly undertake the feasibility evaluation concerned and prepare necessary contracts, with the work to be finished by December 2021 and the JV to be founded in 2022, Foxconn said.

The JV will capitalize on Foxconn's ICT manufacturing capability and strength in managing operation of its global supply chains, Foxtron Vehicle's MIH-based EV R&D and design capability as well as Nidec's globally leading technology in automotive motor system, Foxconn noted.

Foxtron Vehicle in March 2021 signed with Nidec for strategic alliance to promote development of EV-use power driving systems through providing E-Axle, a Nidec-developed traction motor system, for Foxtron Vehicle's clients. The plan to establish the JV can be seen as preparation to start production.

The JV can be a stable supply source of EV-use motor systems for Foxconn and Foxtron Vehicle as well as expand markets and add new clients for Nidec.
