Maharashtra Rains LIVE: 5 killed in Raigad landslides and floods; Navy mobilises rescue teams

The national forecasting agency India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued red and orange alerts for several regions in the state that are set to receive heavy rainfall in the next three days.

Heavy rains lashed most parts of Maharashtra, including Mumbai, Konkan, Kolhapur, and other districts of the state. Four landslides were reported in Raigad late Thursday night. Meanwhile, as many as 47 villages were cut off in the Kolhapur district after roads leading to them were submerged in water due to heavy rains, and 965 families were shifted to safer places, while the Panchganga river hovered near the danger mark.

At least 10 state highways, 29 district highways and 18 rural roads were closed for traffic due to flooding at various stretches in Maharashtra. Two teams of the NDRF were rushed to Ratnagiri's Khed and Chiplun areas to tackle critical situations due to high tide and heavy rain.

The Western Naval Command, Mumbai has mobilised Flood Rescue Teams and helicopters to provide assistance to the state administration, based on a request received from the Government of Maharashtra. A total of seven naval rescue teams departed by road for deployment to the Ratnagiri and Raigarh districts from Mumbai said Indian Navy.

Images and videos showed cars and buildings submerged in water. “Alarming water level in Chiplun,” a resident took to Twitter to sought help from CM Thackeray. “It has risen almost up to first floors. People stuck in their houses...Please send help.”

Earlier on Thursday, Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray held an emergency meeting to take stock of the flood situation in Ratnagiri and Raigad districts in the state, caused by torrential rains that have battered the region over the past 24 hours.

11:10 am | IMD forecasts heavy to very heavy rainfall

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) warns of “heavy to very heavy rain at isolated places” in Mumbai, Thane and Palghar and has issued an orange alert for Friday.

Mumbai will witness a high tide of 4.59 metres on Friday at 11:37 am. Another high tide of 4.01 metres is expected at 11:32 pm today. The maximum city will witness a low tide of 1.68 metres at 5:42 pm on July 23.

Airlift of marooned personnel from Raigarh district is also being undertaken. One Seaking 42C Helo from INS Shikra, Mumbai departed for Rescue at Poladpur/Raigad during early morning hours on Friday.

Additional Flood Rescue Teams are being maintained on a high degree of readiness at Mumbai, for immediate deployment, if the need arises, the Navy said.
