Delhi police has arrested a 21-year-old man on Thursday for allegedly blackmailing women from South Asian countries through the social media platform. Police said the accused has been asking for money from women in exchange for their nude photos and videos.
The accused identified as Jatin Bhardwaj who was using a chat application called talk life to harass women from other countries.
Police said Bhardwaj has been harassing women for a very long time, threatens them to send him money or he will upload all their nude photos and videos on social media platforms and defame them.
Bhardwaj used to target the women who allegedly suffered from depression, divorce, or those who belong to the weaker economic sections with the help of mobile chat applications, police said.
Police said Bhardwaj used to grow friendships with the women and managed to get their nude photos and videos and blackmail them to spread them on social media platforms.
The case came into the limelight when the accused tried to blackmail an Indonesian woman with the same trick. The woman has filed a complaint against the accused online, a senior police officer said.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (Shahdara) R Sathiyasundaram said, after the complaint, Delhi police started collecting all the relevant information regarding the case. The accused’s mobile number was found to be switched off. But later, after identifying the ownership of the number the accused has been arrested.
Sathiyasundaram said further investigation is still underway, the involvement of others is being verified, adding, all the data from the accused’s phone has been seized.
