Beaumont residents could know Tuesday afternoon, once and for all, if nearly $3 million in their tax dollars will be used to acquire the AT&T Building in downtown Beaumont.

The vote, set to take place during the 1:30 p.m. meeting comes fewer than two months after the City Council tabled one that was scheduled for mid-June.

At the time, the council said it would wait 60 more days so it could gather more information and give information about the project to the public.

Then-Mayor Becky Ames also said she wanted to wait for a new mayor to be in the center seat so, if approved, the project didn’t start on rocky footing.

Since then, Robin Mouton was elected mayor and the city held a town hall to give residents new information about what development might look like on the property at 555 Main St. and hear from those with questions and concerns.

More than 200 people turned out for the event, and the majority of them were in favor of the proposal.

If approved on Tuesday, the city would use nearly $2.8 million, plus associated fees, of its rainy day fund to purchase the property.

The meeting starts at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at City Hall, 801 Main St.
