NEW DELHI: Cricketer-turned-politician Navjot Singh Sidhu on Friday met CM Captain Amarinder Singh before taking charge as the Punjab Congress president. Amarinder is also attending the elevation ceremony of Sidhu.
Sidhu and Amarinder Singh have been at loggerheads for the past some time.
The chief minister had opposed Sidhu's appointment as the state Congress chief and had said he won't meet him until the cricketer-turned-politician apologises for his "derogatory" tweets against him.
However, Amarinder Singh on Thursday agreed to attend the installation ceremony of Sidhu.
Party insiders feel that despite his climbdown, it would be premature to assume a thaw in Amarinder’s strained relations with Sidhu. On Thursday, two of the four PCC working presidents, Kuljit Singh Nagra and Sangat Singh Gilzian, reached the CM’s Siswan farmhouse and handed over two invitation letters – one signed by 57-odd MLAs and another personal invitation from Sidhu to Amarinder.
Sidhu wrote to the CM that he had “no personal agenda” and as the “eldest of Punjab Congress family”, the CM should come and bless the new PPCC team. “My resolve and commitment on Punjab’s issues and fulfilling high command’s pro-people 18-point agenda for the welfare of every Punjabi is well known to you and all,” he wrote.
Sidhu is replacing outgoing President Sunil Jakhar, a prominent Hindu face who was at the helm for over four years.
