6:40 PM: Biggest sporting event in the world 32nd Summer Olympic Games got underway with a glittering opening ceremony in Tokyo. Boxer Mary Kom & Indian Men’s Hockey team’s captain Manpreet Singh led the 127-member strong Indian contingent.

5:50 PM: Twenty-five members from the Indian contingent attended the Opening Ceremony amid the COVID-19 concerns in the Japanese capital. Ankita Raina was added to the list of players who attended the event on Friday evening while Manika Batra and Sharath Kamal from the Table Tennis team did not attend the Ceremony. Amit, Ashish Kumar, Mary Kom were among the eight boxers who were present at the function along with six Indian officials.

5:45 PM: Even though the Opening Ceremony kicked off, protestors took to the streets to voice their unhappiness of the Games going ahead in Tokyo.

5:40 PM: This year’s Olympics will feature a record 33 sports comprising 339 events. The initial video which kicked off the ceremony showed Tokyo’s elation at winning the bid to host the Games and then the stadium went into darkness as the 2020 event had to be postponed due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

India’s only Silver medallist at Rio Olympics PV Sindhu has decided to skip the opening ceremony of the Tokyo Olympics. Sindhu along with some of the top shooters will not attend the ceremony due to their events on Saturday. As per the information available 26 members (20 athletes & 6 officials) from the Indian contingent will only attend the opening ceremony from India’s side

India at Tokyo Olympics Opening Ceremony – PV Sindhu to miss out: Manika Batra, Sharath Kamal Sutirtha Mukherjee, and G Sathiyan from the Table Tennis team will attend the ceremony. Amit, Ashish Kumar, Mary Kom are among the eight boxers who will be present at the function. Six Indian officials will take part in the opening ceremony. Meanwhile, Indian Hockey team skipper Manpreet Singh will also be there along with the above-mentioned athletes as he is the flag bearer along with Mary Kom.
Archers, shooters, shuttlers, and hockey players (except Manpreet) among others from the Indian contingent will not be attending the Tokyo 2020 Olympics opening ceremony.
