Asma Hilal Lootah talks about Dubai’s growing feel-good scene

The Global Wellness Institute, a non-profit that publishes a highly anticipated list of wellness trends each year, believes 2021 will be the year of the Travel Reset. “Make sure that all trips become wellness trips, as manic short breaks are replaced by slower, closer, more mindful experiences,” they predict.

Dubai counts on it. The city in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) has been investing in medical tourism for years and is expanding its holistic health offer to appeal to visitors from all over the world and its own population.

“Even before the pandemic broke out, people in Dubai were more concerned about their health and wellbeing,” Lootah, who was born and raised in the city, told mindbodygreen.

Because Dubai has so many foreigners, many residents live apart from friends and loved ones, which affects health and prospects. “We saw the importance of routine, self-care and awareness of wellness to many of them,” she adds.

When the pandemic broke out, Lootah noted that public interest in health only increased and all eyes and forks were on low-inflammation foods and ingredients that support immunity. Sports such as paddle tennis, skydiving and cycling are also becoming increasingly popular, and men and women are trying out new forms of movement. “We have seen an increase in women-only running clubs with a lot of women running marathons and doing new sports like CrossFit,” she says.
