Sickening footage shows pet store worker attack his girlfriend's dog named Sprocket inside a backyard cage - as judge hands him a VERY fitting punishment

  • Tyler Jay Halliday pleaded guilty to breaching duty of care after abusing dog
  • Video shows Boxer cower in fear as Halliday kicks and punches him in the face
  • He will be made to shovel dog faeces as part of community service order

Sickening footage has emerged showing a dog cowering in fear as a man intimidates and physically abuses him in a backyard cage.

The video, played in Mackay Magistrate Court on Tuesday, shows 22-year-old Tyler Jay Halliday attack the Boxer cross named Sprocket on April 17 last year.

The dog belongs to Halliday's former partner and was seen coiling away from the man inside a 'punishment pen' in a Mackay backyard.

During his interview with RSPCA inspectors Halliday, a former pet store worker, said he was angry Sprocket had dug a hole in the yard and claimed he normally wouldn't strike the dog.

The videos show Halliday towering over Sprocket, raising his fist as the dog cowers in fear.

He then kicks the dog in the face before leaning over and punching him in the nose.

The young man then locks Sprocket in the cage before spitting on him from outside.

Other footage shows Halliday throwing an object at Sprocket through the cage as the terrified animal shirks away from him.

The RSPCA received a complaint in April last year and went to the Blacks Beach house to rescue the terrified dog.

Three days later Sprocket was returned to his owner after she visited the RSPCA and told inspectors that she had broken up with Halliday.

When shown the videos and photos in court Halliday said his actions were 'disgusting' and that he 'never should have done it in the first place', The Courier Mail reported.

Magistrate James Morton sentenced Halliday to 100 hours of community after pleading guilty to breaching his duty of care.

The Magistrate indicated Halliday would be made to shovel animal faeces as part of his community service.

He must also pay $1603.60 in legal costs and $164.33 in vet costs.

He is banned from owning an animal for five years, which is the maximum prohibition order.

A conviction was not recorded.
