Ulhas river breaches danger mark in Badlapur; water supply, local train services hit

THANE: As very intense rains lashed Badlapur, Ambernath and neighbouring areas until the wee hours of Thursday, the Ulhas river in the town has now crossed the danger mark.
According to information received from Barrage Headworks, the water treatment plant which is responsible for the water supply in the town and surrounding regions, the water level of the Ulhas river reached 17.80 metres as on Thursday, 4 am.
The danger mark of the river is at 17.50 metres.
"As a safety measure, all pumps have been shut, due to which water supply in Badlapur, Ambernath and Ordnance might be irregular on July 22," officials from Barrage Headworks informed.
Meanwhile, railway tracks between Badlapur and Ambernath have also submerged, resulting in temporary suspension of local trains between Vangani and Ambernath.
Housing societies adjoining the Ulhas river have been witnessing heavy waterlogging for the past two days, forcing residents to wade through waist-deep water.
Residents from some of the low-lying areas situated near the river have also been shifted to safer places by the local civic body.
People have been strictly prohibited from venturing near the town's water bodies, including the Ulhas river, Kondeshwar, Barvi Dam, Chikhloli Dam, among others.
