Having risen from the level of sarpanch of his native Gilzian village near Urmar in Hoshiarpur district, Sangat Singh Gilzian, Urmar MLA, was rarely seen active outside his constituency till he got appointed as PCC working chief.

Gilzian, a BC, represents the Lubana community, which is concentrated in certain pockets of the state, including Urmar and nearby areas like Bholath, Hargobindpur and Sultanpur Lodhi. Known for his personal touch in reaching out to people, the party has tailored the job for Gilzian to connect with voters in the area.

Doaba has a large population settled abroad and their families live here. Gilzian has been told to build strong bonds with these families, assuring them all support. Ahead of Gilzian’s appointment, Jalandhar MP Chaudhary Santokh Singh had been quite optimistic of getting the coveted post based on the fact that he represents the Ravidassia community, but the high command went ahead with Gilzian.
