The U.S. Women's National Team (USWNT) arrives at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics with the perennial tag of pre-tournament favorite and the added pressure of delivering a fairytale send-off for its core veterans.
The team's oldest player at 39 years of age, Carli Lloyd, is unlikely to be around for the 2024 Olympics in Paris and the same can be said about Megan Rapinoe and Becky Sauerbrunn, who are both 36. Tobin Heath will be 37 in three years, while Kelley O'Hara, Alex Morgan and Christen Press will all be 35.
USWNT head coach Vlatko Andonovski believes experience could prove crucial if the U.S. is to win a first Olympic gold medal in nine years.
"I don't judge the players by their age—they are either good and will perform well and help us win or they can't," he told Goal.com.
Gold medalist four times in the first five Olympics that featured women's soccer Atlanta, the Rio Games proved to be a major disappointment for the USWNT after it lost to Sweden on penalties in the quarterfinals.
It marked the first time the USWNT had failed to bring home the gold medal since it lost to Norway in the final at the 2000 Olympics in Sydney. More significantly, it was the first time the USWNT hadn't featured in the gold medal match at all.
The disappointment didn't last long, as the Americans added an eighth Gold Cup in 2018 and then successfully defended their World Cup title 12 months later.
Jill Ellis stepped down shortly after the World Cup triumph and the USWNT hasn't missed a beat under Andonovski, winning 22 and drawing one of his first 23 games in charge—the best-ever start put together by a USWNT head coach.
Runner-up to eventual champion Germany—who have failed to qualify for the Tokyo Games—at the Rio Olympics five years ago, Sweden finished third at the 2019 World Cup and arrive in Japan ranked fifth in the world.
Along with the No. 1-ranked USWNT, the Scandinavians are favorite to progress from Group G, which also includes Australia and New Zealand, the No. 9 and No. 22 team in the world respectively.

The USWNT begins its Olympic campaign at the Tokyo Stadium in the Japanese capital. Opened in 2001, the venue hosted the opening ceremony and the opening game of the 2019 Rugby World Cup and seven other matches, including the bronze medal match.
The USWNT will play in Saitama against New Zealand on July 24 and in Kashima against Australia three days later for their final game of Group G.
