Bride dislocates knee during first dance, returns to wedding from hospital

This bride’s first dance left her weak in the knees — and in lots of pain.

Julie Benn and Paul Richter finally tied the knot in Conshohocken, Pennsylvania, on July 3 after postponing their wedding last year amid the COVID-19 pandemic, People magazine reported.

The lovebirds exchanged their vows in front of their loved ones and everything proceeded without a hitch before they headed to celebrate on the dance floor.

“I felt so much love and happiness there. And you’re just seeing all these people you love and you’re like, ‘This is amazing,'” Paul told the mag.

“There was a couple of moments where I just wanted to stand back and just watch, it was so cool,” he said, adding that “the first dance happened and the day changed.”

The 32-year-old Army second lieutenant gently dipped his radiant bride to the strains of the Dave Matthews Band hit, “Stay.” 

And things then went horribly wrong as Julie, 34, dislocated her left knee.

“I can’t watch the video of it. [Her knee] went out and Julie looked at me right away and she goes, ‘I dislocated my knee.’ Just like that, she knew,” the new hubby told People.

“So then my mindset goes from like, ‘Oh yeah, we’re having a great dance right now,’ to, ‘All right, get her a chair,’” he added.

Julie, who said she wore flats instead of heels for the dance, has no clue why her knee gave out, leaving her in agony in front of the horrified crowd.

“He’s holding my entire body weight and my dress, which is massive,” she said. “And I’m like, ‘I need to get a chair.’ I’m simultaneously screaming. One of our dear friends is an orthopedic physical therapist, she works on knees. I saw her face, and I’m screaming.”

Julie added: “[They’re] holding my knee in place, supporting it, and it was blinding, searing pain.

“I have a lot of respect for athletes who play through their injuries. I never dislocated a knee. I broke a bone when I was a kid, but nothing else. So it was shocking, disbelief,” she added.

Still in her wedding gown, the bride spent the next few hours at a hospital, where her knee was reset and she was given a load of pain meds before she gamely returned to the wedding venue with her husband.

“All of our friends and family were standing there, cheering and shouting for us,” Julie said.

Julie is still undergoing intense physical therapy on her swollen knee as the couple enjoys their next few months together before Paul heads to Oklahoma with the Army until next year.

Despite the painful episode, Julie is happy they finally got hitched and is thankful for the outpouring of support.

“We have felt so loved by everyone,” she said.

Paul added: “I can’t imagine what it would have been like to have a normal wedding at this point. But the love and support and everything we felt has been amazing.”
