The India Meteorological Department has predicted predicts occasional gusty winds with the speed of around 40-50 kmph to 60 kmph in a few areas.
Intermittent rain in Mumbai; IMD predicts more showers. No water-logging in low-lying areas like Hindmata, Matunga and Kurla occurred, officials of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) said.
Northwest India will certainly see decrease in the intensity of rainfall in next 24 hours. Western Himalayan Region (Jammu, Kashmir & Ladakh, Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand) to experience fairly widespread to widespread rainfall along with isolated heavy downpours.
Punjab and Uttar Pradesh will see further reduction from July 21 onward and forecast of it increasing from July 25. Delhi during next 24 hours will have moderate rainfall at scattered places.
IMD says, “Widespread rainfall with isolated heavy to very heavy falls very likely to continue over west coast and adjoining interior areas and Gujarat region during next 4-5 days”.
Isolated extremely heavy falls also very likely over Konkan, Goa & adjoining Ghat areas of Madhya Maharashtra on July 21 – July 22.
IMD in a statement shared, “Isolated heavy rainfall over south Gujarat region till 23rd July and likely to increase to isolated heavy to very heavy falls from 24th July”.
The Regional Meteorological Centre of the IMD issued a 'red alert' for Mumbai, predicting heavy to very heavy rainfall in the country's financial capital on Wednesday.
Earlier, the MeT office had sounded an 'orange alert', but it is now been changed to 'red alert' for Wednesday because of the "favourable synoptic conditions", Dr Jayant Sarkar, head of the Regional Meteorological Centre here said.
Heavy rains had battered the metropolis on Sunday and Monday as well.
"There are two favourable synoptic situations for heavy to very heavy rains in Mumbai today and in the next few days. The offshore trough, spread from south Gujarat coast to Karnataka is expected to increase the intensity of showers," Sarkar said.
The second factor is the "shear zone" (referring to wind patterns) developed over Mumbai and the neighbouring region, he said.
Sarkar there will be widespread rainfall over Konkan and central Maharashtra as well.
The Marathwada region is also expected to receive widespread showers till Thursday and the rain intensity is likely to reduce subsequently, he said.
There is an off-shore trough running between Maharashtra and Karnataka, which generally carries moisture-laden westerly winds from the Arabian Sea to land, another official from the MeT office said. (PTI)
As per India Meteorological Department (IMD), intensity of the rainfall over northwest India is likely to reduce further after 24-hours.
Fairly widespread to widespread rainfall with isolated heavy falls very likely over Western Himalayan Region (Jammu, Kashmir & Ladakh, Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand) and adjoining northwest India (Punjab and Uttar Pradesh) today 21st with further reduction thereafter. It is likely to increase from 25th July.

Parts of Uttar Pradesh, Haryana and adjoining areas to receive light to moderate rainfall along with thunderstorms, as per IMD. During next two hours these areas will start receiving light to moderate spells of rain.
Intermittent rains lashed Mumbai on Wednesday, but the rail and transport services were not affected, officials said.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has sounded an 'orange alert' for Mumbai on Wednesday, indicating the possibility of heavy to very heavy rainfall at isolated places.
Though there was increased rain intensity in the city and suburbs since morning, there was no report of any major water-logging in low-lying areas like Hindmata, Matunga and Kurla, officials of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) said.
According to BMC officials, the IMD has predicted moderate to heavy rain in the city and suburbs with the possibility of very heavy showers at a few places and occasional winds reaching 45-55 kmph gusting to 60 kmph in some areas.
The island city recorded 11.69 mm rain, while the eastern and western suburbs received 17.95 mm and 13.24 mm rain, respectively, in the 24-hour period ending at 8 am on Wednesday, the BMC said.
"In spite of the heavy rains, the Western Railway's suburban train services are running normal," WR's chief public relations officer Sumit Thakur said.
The local train services on the Central Railway route, which were badly hit due to the heavy downpour on Sunday and Monday, were also running normal, a CR official said.
There was no diversion of bus services of the Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST) and the operations were smooth so far, its spokesperson said. (PTI)
Seven people were killed and two others injured in different incidents of wall and roof collapse following incessant rains in this district of Uttar Pradesh, an official said on Wednesday.
Seven people died in three different incidents of wall and roof collapse due to heavy rains since Tuesday night, District Magistrate Vishal Bhardwaj said.
Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath condoled the loss of lives and directed the officials to reach the spot for providing help to the victims.
Four members of a family were killed and two others critically injured when a wall and a tin shed collapsed on them in the early hours of Wednesday in Laksminpur village, the DM said .
Lalli Devi (50), Shailendra (10), Shiva (8) and Neeraj (2) -- all belonging to the same family -- died in the incident, officials said, adding that the injured have been admitted to hospital.
In Nankari village, Ram Lotan (42) and his wife Anita (38) died after a wall collapsed on them, DM Bhardwaj said.
A 60-year-old man in Sadarpur police station area was killed as a thatched roof fell on him due to heavy rains, he said.
He also announced a compensation of Rs 4 lakh for the next of kin of each of the deceased. (PTI)

In 24 hours ending at 8:30 am on Wednesday, IMD’s Santacruz observatory recorded 23.9 mm rain, categorised as moderate rainfall and Colaba observatory recorded 8 mm rain, which falls in the light rainfall category. The rainfall activity is likely to be persistent through Wednesday in Mumbai. (ENS)
With active monsoon conditions over the city, Mumbai has recorded short but intense spells of rain since early Wednesday morning.
According to the India Meteorological Department’s (IMD) forecast, moderate to heavy rain is very likely in the city and suburbs with the possibility of very heavy falls at a few places Wednesday. Rains have continued over Pune for the third straight day.
Though of moderate intensity, the entire district is experiencing well-distributed rain with ghats recording heavy spells occasionally.
Rainfall recorded over Pune, during the 24-hours, was Shivajinagar -4.3mm, Lohegaon – 9.4mm and Pashan – 3.9mm during the last 24 hours.
The southwest monsoon remains active over Konkan, Goa and Madhya Maharashtra. On Wednesday, ghat areas of Pune will witness isolated by heavy to very heavy spells (64.5mm to 204.4mm in 24-hours), the India Meteorological Department has forecast.
Cloudy sky conditions will give way to light to moderate rain (2.4mm to 64.4mm in 24-hours) over the city. Read more
