Assam: 18 hooch arrests in Golaghat to curb spread

JORHAT: Excise department officials in upper Assam's Golaghat district have conducted a massive drive after the administration found that illegal liquor dens were responsible for the rapid surge of Covid cases in the district. Golaghat was declared total containment zone for the second consecutive time on Monday after it was included in the list on July 7.
As many as 18 people have been arrested by police and the excise department officials for their involvement with illegal liquor trade in Golaghat within a week. Excise department officials registered 54 cases and seized a huge amount of illicitly distilled liquor, fermented wash and distilling apparatus from several parts in the district in 29 separate operations carried out within the week.
An excise department official in Golaghat said, "Besides tea gardens like Bokolai, Rangajan and Hatikhuli, we have conducted operations at Narayanpur, Kalajan, Singfura, Barichowa, Da-borahi, Jamuguri, Mokrong, Gomari, Borjan, Torani, Athukoha chuk, Norakonwar Gaon, Purabangla, Murfuloni, Novonga Mising Gaon, Rongamati, Badulipar,Lokhoujan, Geleki, Aamtenga, Difolu Pothar, Tamuli Gaon, Notun Jurhotia, Nagajuri, Panjan, Jaya Pothar, Numaligarh and Kandulimari in the past seven days till Tuesday. We have seized 30,300 litres of country liquor, 51,800 litres foreign liquor, 14,580 litres fermented wash and 465 litres sulai ."
