LUCKNOW: A 17-year-old girl was allegedly killed by her uncles and grandfather for opposing their ‘no jeans’ diktat in
Mahuadeeh area of Deoria district, on Monday.
The accused threw the body off the Patanwa bridge on
Kasya-Patna highway but it got stuck in the grille of the bridge and kept hanging there for hours when passers-by spotted it and informed the police.
The girl’s grandfather, Paramhans Paswan, was arrested on Tuesday while her uncles,
Arvind Paswan and
Vyas Paswan, are still on the run.
According to police, the girl had started putting on modern clothes after the family, along with father Amarnath Paswan, shifted to Ludhiana
Punjab where he works. After she and her mother came back to the village, she did not , as demanded by elders, switched to desi wear, and used to remain outside for long hours.
Superintendent of police, Deoria,
Shripati Mishra told the TOI, “The girl was living with her mother, Shakuntala Devi, while her father, Amarnath, works in Ludhiana (Punjab). On Monday, Arvind asked Shakuntala to stop her daughter from wearing western clothes and staying outside for long. Paramhans also supported Arvind. In the meantime, the girl returned home and overheard the conversation.”
“The issue snowballed when the girl opposed their diktat and allegedly slapped Arvind. Irked over this, Arvind, his wife, and brother (Vyas) pushed the girl in a fit of rage. She hit against the wall and slumped on the ground, bleeding profusely,” said Mishra.
When they found that the girl had died, they hired an auto-rickshaw and took the body to Kasya-Patna highway where they threw it from Patanwa bridge, the
SP said.
“However, the body got stuck in the grille of the bridge and kept hanging there. On Tuesday morning, passers-by spotted the body and informed the police,” he added.
Police reached the spot and sent the body for post-mortem examination.
“We have arrested the auto-driver, Hasnain, and the victim’s grandfather, Paramhans. Efforts are on to nab Arvind and Vyas,”
Mishra said, adding that the girl’s father has been informed about the incident.
